darken, fwiw, about 25 tribes and 60 other native American organizations that have issued statements or passed resolutions voicing their opposition to the Redskin name. Perhaps you should get in touch with them and make your opinion known.

So that's one man's opinion and some blacks prefer the term colored. :noidea:
I wouldn't really have a clue on that one because the ones I know are still calling each other n***ers or similar on a regular basis. This brings me to another reality: When do we just start calling all who where born in the U.S. of A. Americans? Part of my heritage is Irish (Yep, drunken Indian and Irish jokes have filled my past) but if I went to Ireland would I say I am Irish or American? The anwser is simple.

Again..I don't care what these organizations do. Most of them are just looking for a payday. I would look into how many members are more than 10% Native American.

He was racists toward blacks, but never showed that attitude towards Native Americans IMO. Seem to admire them actually.

I have no clue really, but what was acceptable 80 years ago isn't necessarily acceptable now. Blacks were called all sorts of names a century ago and nobody blinked and eye. Times change. My take is that if enough Native Ams are offended by it they should probably change it. I don't really care one way or the other. I was a Skins fan for 25 years. We had season tix 66-72, then I moved to Detroit... stayed a Skins fan till the Barry years. They're still a secondary rooting interest, though Snyder is an idiot (not necessarily because of the Redskin controversy). I remember when the Redskinettes used to dress up in fake Indian garb including black wigs with pigtails. That was pretty ridiculous and they finally knocked it off. Skins fans should start getting used to a different name, though, because it's coming. This snowball is rolling downhill fast.

I can agree with that. However in my eyes, the name change is driven by a small group, trying to stake a claim to fame. I guess we'll see, the call to change the name has picked up some momentum, but that could get stalled.

I would agree with the bolded and I know the PC is just stirring up shit IMO. I wonder how many Chinese who have lived in the US get sick of being called Chinese-American? How many African-Americans never came from Africa but just because they are black they have to put that down on a resume? Get this correct: My beef was never with the redskins name ,just the Indian name.

I've discussed this ad nauseam on here and other places about this very issue. Never went well. I was accused of faking my heritage and just trying to be involved in the debate somehow. I will post this yet again in this type of thread: I despise being called an Indian. I am not from India. I am half Native American and have no issue with the term redskin. Thank you PC police for not noticing the simple facts here and when will Columbus Day not be a national holiday? (got suspended in 2nd grade for this rant).

Bravo Darken. The reality is that Many NAs feel exactly the same way as you do. And actually support teams named the redskins (including my franchise) and it's name. Regardless of what others may want to believe, this is fact.

I've read articles from both sides of the issue. And my conclusion is look at the motivation for all this. Look at the integrity of WHO are the figureheads of this message. There you will find the answer.

Now this part is my opinion, feel free to disagree. That's what makes America unique. Lack of censorship of opinions...

Now does every NA feel this way. I'm sure they don't.

Still doesn't make this a racist word. It makes it a word, that like any other, with intent and context can be used as an epitaph....but it simply isn't used commonly that way, no matter how people want to try and make it so.

And this is the point. So far there has been no credible polling by an unbiased group since the AP almost 10 years ago now.

And I've said many times, if political pressure forces a name change, my stance is call them the 'Skins', adopt the spear as a logo and F em all.

Yep. Therefore I have advocated making it simple. No more team names that represent any group of humans - no Redskins, Warriors, Cowboys, Vikings, Patriots, etc, etc. You can only be the Lions, Colts, Cardinals, Seahawks, etc. This would be just as stupid as the way our govt is currently wasting time on the Redskins issue with the very specific purpose of taking attn away from their other major failures.

that's fine by me. I really wouldn't give two shits if any of my teams changed their nicknames.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Come down to AZ & I'll introduce to a couple of my coworkers & let them explain to why they don't give a fuck about the team being named Redskins & why this PC money grab is all nonsense.

Newsflash: America is not the West Indies, so don't call me an Indian, I'm a god damned Merikan. If you call me an Indian, knowing damn well I'm a Merikan, I'm likely to do what Merikans do best, bitch about it. If you call yourself an Indian, knowing damn well you aren't from Indian, well then you're too stupid to be offended in the first place and shouldn't have a say about bitching about any other potentially derogatory statements.

No more animal names either - you'll offend the PITA chicks!
Patriots name offends the Pacifists,
Titans name offends midgets
49ers name offends gold-diggers
The aqua dolphins offends the South Beach Straights
What a mess.....

I think the name should be changed so we can make fun of the new name.....

Sorry but none of that is remotely true. Indian was simply the name that stuck because Columbus originally thought he'd reached the East indies. The term Indian was never considered derogatory nor is it today. It's more Indian = black and Native Am = African Am, and none of them are considered derogatory nor anything even close to the N word. I don't know where you got that idea. That's why I asked you according to whom, when you claimed that indian is much more derogatory than redskin.

I said it is more offensive by definition. Natives called themselves Redskins in treaties, never once did they call themselves indians. An entire race labeling another race as the english settlers did is in fact racist. The worst time in our country was when we had "Indian" relations.

Can't think of a single reason why a Native American can get offended by Redskin but not by Indian, when in fact Andrew Jackson that help demonize every Indian, not just individual tribes as it had been in our country prior. He made the Indian "not Native, not Redskin" but all Indians the new boogeyman.

PETA would love changing the Redskins to animal f*ckers, it would be a nod to their terrorist organization.

I'm glad the Redskins put this out. "Redskin" is only offensive if you try to make it offensive. And I have NEVER heard a single soul try to use it to belittle anyone.

I've heard plenty of people try to use the words "liberal" and "right-winger" in a derogatory fashion. But you won't hear anyone crying about how those words shouldn't be used. People need to get over this redskins nonsense...

...and start bitching about the use of "Indians." That shit is straight up racist!

Really? Any newscaster would be instantly canned if they used the term on the air. That's not even the argument at this point. The franchise is arguing that it's not offensive in the context of football.
