Is this the end of the Paul Johnson/triple option era at Georgia Tech?

I think GT could be better than where they are at, so maybe it's time to look at a new coach

From what I've heard, PJ has had to fight hard to get the restrictions a lifted a little for student athletes at GT. The school leadership does not like to make exceptions for sports. They gave PJ a little more room to bring in a few more questionable academic athletes just a few years ago. (this is what a GT insider told me) They basically said, "if these kids screw up, we will go back to the previous restrictions...so recruit wisely". That would be a tough position for a coach to recruit under IMO...if it is true.
That really does suck, but I guess it's a technical school, so not a huge shock there.

No doubt, but Michigan and USC definitely don't have the academic requirements that GT has, from what I've been told. I believe EVERY freshman at GT has to take TRIG...not exceptions.

Stanford, Duke, ND have tough requirements from what I've heard (I would think that USC and Michigan will have no problems getting just about any high end recruit onto their team, as long as they are eligible according to NCAA rules), but it's not like any of those teams have been head and shoulders better than GT over the past 15 years or so. They may have more wins, but GT has won and played in the ACC title game a few times over the past decade. They haven't been awful under PJ, but they don't seem to be going anywhere either.

gt won the acc in 1990 (and shared the NC with colorado)
gt and FSU shared (before the CG was set) the title in 1998
tech won it in 2009, but was later vacated by the NCAA
FSU beat tech in 2012 and 2014

Isn't that what I said in the post you quoted?? They may have gotten the ACC title vacated, but they still won the title game.

won once, and it doesn't count, so I guess you could say they have played in it a few times in the last decade...

Two things. First, Trignometry is a high school course. Actual college mathematics for STEM majors begins with Calculus. Second, since GaTech is basically an Engineering school (it says so right in their fight song), I think it is reasonable for them to expect students to come in ready to take calculus. If they aren't, and they want to major in engineering, they had better plan on at least 6 years to get done with a BS degree.

It's GT...not a destination for good to great coaches anyway, so get rid of Johnson, then what?

Derick Dooley? Skip Holtz? Lane Kiffin?

Maybe they could get Calvin Johnson to coach?

Harbaugh may be available in a year if he doesn't start beating a few teams
Kiffin would be a great hire.

It would be a multi year rebuild just to get his players in.

That’s the thing wih cfb, very hard to flip styles on a dime. Especially when guys you could get need to sit out a year.

The problem with moving on from specialized systems like GT utilizes is your pretty much throwing away at least 3 years. Every guy on that offense was recruited to run that offense. You fire Johnson to go another direction all you've got is a bunch of options guys trying to run a regular offense. Look at the teams that used to run that offense and now dont. Some of them have never recovered

Exactly. It’s very hard. You will probsbly either start a true frosh or a Juco transfer at qb.

Defensively you can mitigate the effects. But offensively you’re probably a train wreck.

Look at Arkansas this year

As someone who recently had a GT freshman son, can confirm Calculus I, II and III are part of the freshman engineering curriculum, Trig is not, best be in your high school classes though, or things might get tough for you quickly. As of 1987 Drownproofing 101 is no longer required...wonder if anybody has statistics on accidentally drowning deaths by Georgia Tech grads...

The dude is 3-8 against UGA, and has never beaten them in Atlanta, and the OP acts like he has dominated the rivalry.

This is true!

Michigan went through this twice in less than 5 years (Carr to RichRod to Hoke)

And why is that bad? I’m talking long term. It depends if GT wants to stay in a system that limits their ability at true success. PJ isn’t young, so they have to cross this bridge eventually, and their next triple threat coach is likely not to be nearly as good. PJ is probably the best triple option coach in the history of college football (that’s not saying a lot as there are very few of them)

On the flip side, Paul Johnson's first year at GT was one of his best seasons there, and it was done with Chan Gailey's pro style players, including the QB.

That’s what you got from my post? I understand you love UGA, but you can give GT just a little bit of credit...it won’t mean you don’t love UGA.

Again, he has had some success against UGA (especially in Athens the past few years), and hadn’t had more than a handful of 4* recruits in the history of him coaching there (zero 5*). Being 3-8 when comparing most recruiting classes between GT and UGA is pretty impressive to me. Although UGA has been dominate in the series, no doubt.

Still PJ has had some success at GT, but not enough for them to keep him imo.

But GT has kinda made their bed with the triple option, but if they want to get out of it, the sooner they get the transition started, the better off they will be. Paul Johnson isn't a spring chicken either, what's their plans when he retires? Just hire the Navy or Army coach?

I refuse to acknowledge anything done against Mark Richt post 2005.

I don’t blame you, although if we throw out the Mark Richt years, UGA is 1-1 against Paul Johnson. :D
