I missed the first half of todays game but idk what is it but the play calling just seems off. Especially these past couple weeks. Vernon said after the Bears game that the handcuffs were taken off, now it seems like they are back on.

The play calling last week cost us the game, it almost cost us todays game to. I am glad we won but if we play like we played last week we will lose. Let me re-phrase that, if the coaches call plays and manage the clock like they did this week we will lose.

No players that I saw really performed bad today. Kaep did good, honestly I don't see Alex performing better today. Everyone has high expectations for Kaep so some people are putting his game today down, but if Alex had the same game I think the same people would be talking about how accurate he is and how he is gonna lead us to the SB this year

The play calling and coaching was never an issue until a few weeks ago. Now its suddenly a massive problem :gossip:

I disagree with that one, it may have become more of an issue lately but the conservative play calling has been an issue for a while now.

Technically it could be the same even with Alex earlier in the season.

Harbs and drunk Roman are just conservative and as a fan, it's frustrating because it backfires at the worse of times. Not enough chances to score TDs, it will bite us in the ass.

The lack of Vernon is really irking me. The guy could do so well for himself if he gets involved more in the attacking game but he's our best blocker which hurts him.

I could understand the "double team" or the "extra attention" defenses will put on VD but all the way through what week 13? Idk, Walker is getting chances that I wish VD was, heck you see how happy VD was after the bears game? lol

At first I was thinking that teams were paying extra attention to VD was why his targets were limited. But after watching the Rams and Dolphins game that can't be the reason.

If you watch closely both the Rams and Dolphins stacked the box vs the 49ers. With 8 in the box that means you have a single high safety. With a single high safety it makes it much harder to double the TE since he has a 2 way go. So there isn't as much focus on VD as I had previously thought.

Also I think Kap prefers to throw the ball to Crabs and Manningham. Davis has become the 3rd best receiver on our team. We need to run more plays to him a quick out crossing pattern post seem route something that uses Davis's athleticism.

I agree with this. It may seem like a double standard that this kind of playcalling was good enough for Smith but not Kaepernick but the difference is the latter has shown the willingness and more importantly the ability to make difficult throws.

Agreed. Its clear as day. Kaepernick just does not recognize defenses quickly enough yet; that will come with experience though. Gotta keep Davis interested though until that happens or he will check out mentally.

Yea I think Davis is mature enough now that he will play hard with whatever role he currently has. That is as long as the 49ers keep winning.

I guess to be the #2 Rushing Offense, and just a hair out from being #1... other areas of the offense are sacrificed. In the 49ers case it is the passing game not living up to higher expectations considering how many WRs the 49ers brought in this offseason.

This is an interesting question because judging our offense from one perspective we have one of the top offenses in the league in both rushing & passing; however, judging our offense from the more traditional perspective, we accept that we are solid in our running game but weak in our passing game.

The difference, IMO, has more to do with coaching philosophy than offensive play calling.

just asking...............my first reaction upon reading it was.....isn't play calling born of coaching philosophy? please elaborate on the differences?

A couple things here...

1. I don't think it would be wise to send a first year starter in there with guns-a-blazin...

2. Harbaugh is protecting his investment. He has to justify the QB change and make the media forget about #11. He can't do that if they are calling risky plays that cause TO's...

3. The team has practiced and executed conservative play calls since Harbaugh has arrived. I don't think you can just change everything over night...

You can see small wrinkles added each week, but it will be a slower proccess then some would like...

Absolutely. Think parent/child relationship. The child is simply doing what the parent wishes. Thus it may not be Roman holding us back but rather the restrictions placed upon the child by the parent.

Roman could go to another team and institute a completely different offense while another OC might come to us and be required to work within the philosophical parameters established by Harbaugh.

It is just a broader perspective answer to the question.

mahalo for the explanation. yeah it is broader whereas i was asking for specifics? :-)

you said it was more coaching philosophy as opposed to play calling, so i'm still not sure what the difference is? to me, play calling is a result of your coaching philosophy.

anyway, don't need to respond.

The problem is that making the move to Kaep is ONLY really going to pay any real kind of dividends if the Niners open the offense up and take advantage of his talents. Running the same offense that you ran with Smith isnt going to do anything other than take you as far as what Smith could have taken you anyway ( and that is a best case scenario). If you are making this move then you need to make it, you need to go with it 100% and do what you need to do to have it make sense. Otherwise it just looks like you are losing a ton of experience and playing the same QB.
