Is it just me or have there been more injuries in recent years?

NFL is making all these rules to make the game "safer", but it seems like ever since they have hammered down on it, there have been far more injuries.

Coincidence?

Seems to go hand and hand with the pussification of football.

Yup. Curious if there has been a study. Ever sense they limited the amount of padded practices during camp and the week, seems to be more injuries.

Well, the athletes are bigger and stronger and the techniques are different these days too so I'm sure that contributes to it

Now, there are changes that I do like. It is mostly about how they handle the injuries after the fact, like clearing them to play. I think a player with concussion signs should be done for the game, and possibly more depending on severity.

I just don't like how their way of making a contact sport "safer" is by taking away contact that is common and sometimes not avoidable. Sometimes, I think the "safer" rule is more dangerous.

But has this been the case in the past? Were there more injuries from players in the 90s than there were in the 80s?

So why is that? I wonder if you take away a lot of "tools", the only thing left is to just hit the guy as hard as you can?

IMO, one of the dumbest rules in the NFL is the QB slide (I know it's not new). When a QB slides, they are not prepared for a hit. I've seen many QBs get hit and concussion by a QB slide and no penalty was called. Lowering the shoulder is safer because you tense up your muscles and prepare for a hit.

Make the QBs lower the shoulder, go out of bounds, dive early, etc. It's a contact sport, so injuries will happen. I just think it will happen less if they lower the shoulder.

Lot more ACL for certain...the rules are forcing players to target lower, and I'm sure that has contributed. I think they need to allow for 60 man rosters and have 53 active every week.

It certainly seems that way. With players being stronger, faster and bigger, it seems like this would be the case. I'm not sure if improvement in equipment can prevent the kind of injuries we've been seeing. That hit that 49ers, Eric Reid, took yesterday was brutal. To me, the league is living on borrowed time until someone is paralyzed--again--or dies as a result of injuries.

There does seem to be an increase in leg injuries (we've had a lot on the Bills) I wonder if there's a connection? Good point.

Yea. And it is not all the NFL's fault. The players association fucked up. No mini-camps. Limited contact during the week. This is shit THEY wanted. Now their bodies are not ready for gameday, and we're all paying to watch the product of a halfassed work force. I'm about ready to stop watching.

I just noticed this in the article I posted..........Good observation.

"However, it does appear that torn anterior cruciate ligament injuries are up significantly."

It's worth thread......Inside the NFL: Some contending teams are hurting big time - Sports - The Buffalo News

I never did think about that. It make sense. They are the ones that do say "Look at those guys who played in the 50s and 60s. They are suffering now."

Not proven, but I wonder if the new turf is a factor...because some guys are going down untouched like the IND WR. Supposed to be a faster surface, and the shoes are supposed to provide better grip.

That's a good point too. Not sure about the guy's going down untouched but if the shoes grip better they also would give less when there is contact esp from the side's. Like that article said ACL injuries are up so there must be a reason. On grass the foot will slide when there's contact but if there is no slide that energy has to go some where.

Training Camp no longer gets players ready for a physical football team. It's hard to get ready for a grueling season when you're barely hitting in camp, and not getting yourself ready. They players got what they wanted, but they didn't really think it through

All of the stuff that players hated and wanted to get rid of served a purpose, and they're not seeing that purpose.
