PHILADELPHIA (9/30) -- Manager Terry Collins offered a few insights Wednesday that might help offer clarity regarding the New York Mets' Division Series roster.
Collins said that while it might make sense on an American League roster, it will be difficult on a National League roster to carry a player specializing in pinch-running, such as Eric Young Jr.
Collins also began to question the prudence of placing Steven Matz in the Division Series rotation, especially if the southpaw does not pitch this weekend. Matz is dealing with upper-back stiffness on his right side. Collins noted that if Matz is included in the opening-round roster and then is unable to pitch and is replaced, rules stipulate that he would be ineligible for the NLCS as well.
With those insights from Collins in mind, let's now project Bartolo Colon in the NLDS rotation instead of Matz, which opens a bullpen spot for Sean Gilmartin.
Gilmartin makes sense with Colon in the rotation because it gives Collins a multi-inning reliever in case a starter is knocked out early. Jonathon Nieseshould be in the bullpen, but his optimal usage might be, say, the sixth or seventh inning with a few lefty batters due up.
As for the position players, it's unclear if Juan Uribe (chest injury) will be ready. But given how many southpaws the Mets might see in the opening round against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the best bet is Uribe is ready.
So here's the new projection:
Rotation:
1. Jacob deGrom
2. Noah Syndergaard
3. Matt Harvey
4. Colon
Bullpen:
5. Jeurys Familia
6. Tyler Clippard
7. Addison Reed
8. Niese
9. Hansel Robles
10. Erik Goeddel
11. Gilmartin
Position players:
12. Travis d'Arnaud
13. Kevin Plawecki
14. Lucas Duda
15. Daniel Murphy
16. David Wright
17. Wilmer Flores
18. Ruben Tejada
19. Uribe
20. Kelly Johnson
21. Michael Conforto
22. Michael Cuddyer
23. Yoenis Cespedes
24. Curtis Granderson
25. Juan Lagares
Top healthy players left off: Young, Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Dilson Herrera,Anthony Recker, Eric Campbell, Logan Verrett, Carlos Torres, Bobby Parnell,Eric O'Flaherty and Dario Alvarez
