well it's about time....I've been saying it and wanted them to do this weeks ago...

ST. LOUIS -- After an 18-inning win against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, the New York Mets demoted Johnny Monell and replaced him with Anthony Recker as the backup catcher.

Kevin Plawecki caught all 18 innings in sauna-like conditions at Busch Stadium in the series finale, so Recker is likely to catch Matt Harvey on Monday night in D.C.

Recker had been optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on June 14. He hit .293 with seven homers and 19 RBIs and had a .398 on-base percentage in 75 at-bats in the Pacific Coast League.

In two stints with the Mets this season, Monell is hitting .178 (8-for-45) with four RBIs.

Despite Sunday's 18-inning game, manager Terry Collins said the Mets did not need an extra arm for the series opener against the Washington Nationals. Alex Torres went unused Sunday. Jeurys Familia, Bobby Parnell and Jenrry Mejia all should be available on Monday as well, according to Collins.

WASHINGTON (7/20) -- Michael Conforto, a 2014 first-round draft pick of the New York Mets, followed up his solid showing at the Futures Game by earning the Eastern League Player of the Week award.

Conforto hit .438 (7-for-16) with a double, triple and two homers in a four-game series for Double-A Binghamton against Trenton.

Representing the Mets in the Futures Game last week in Cincinnati, Conforto started in left field and went 2-for-2 with an outfield assist.

He was drafted 10th overall out of Oregon State last year after earning Pac-12 Player of the Year honors.

Mets officials have told ESPN.com that it is unlikely the 22-year-old Conforto will make his major league debut this season.

Since a promotion to the B-Mets, Conforto is hitting .325 with five homers and 24 RBIs in 157 Double-A at-bats.

Well this certainly is encouraging......

WASHINGTON -- David Wright remains uncleared to begin baseball activity, general manager Sandy Alderson told ESPN.com on Monday.

"No change," Alderson indicated via email when asked if Wright's status had changed as a result of his weekly Monday examination with back specialist Robert Watkins in Los Angeles.

Manager Terry Collins had indicated two weeks ago that Wright soon expected to be cleared for baseball activity.

Wright is dealing with spinal stenosis in his lower back.

NOT!!!

I don't think Wright is coming back this year. D'arnaud is taking forever. Looks like Cuddyer will hit the DL at some point. Duda forgot how to hit. Front office needs to make a move. We have the pitching to make the stretch run interesting for a change, why waste it.

Until the Wilponzi ownership ends their ridiculous austerity philosophy, and Sandy Alderson the GM, along w/ his cohorts are no longer complacent...and TC the "manager" stops making boneheaded decisions during games...this team will remain muddled in mediocrity, and will not be able to get to the next level anytime soon.

Let's hope the pitchers stay healthy and we can use some of our freed up salary from Wright, Colon and Murphy after this season to bring in a free agent or 2 and make a trade. 2016 is totally our year!

As pissed off as I get at Sandy/Collins and The Coupons, I'm not losing hope for this year...we're still in it. We're still in it. We're still in it.

I feel better if I keep repeating that. ;)

Realistically we are but I need to see something from the front office. Make a legit move. They won't make a move and they'll spin it in the offseason as "well we had injuries, if those guys had played we'd be fine etc.". Well, the Nationals have as many injuries as we do... and then some. 4 of their 6 best hitters have missed significant time this year.

Uribe and Johnson are solid pickups, major league hitters with versatility. Didn't give up much, still have all of our big trade chips. That's probably all we'll do but I would love one more, bigger move. Parra from the Brewers would be a nice get. Then Duda needs to get his shit together and D'Arnaud needs to get healthy.

Agreed. I wish we had done it sooner, but it's something.

NEW YORK -- New York Mets catcher Travis d'Arnaud went 1-for-3 and caught five innings on Saturday night with Double-A Binghamton at Trenton as his rehab assignment officially began.

D'Arnaud suffered a left elbow sprain on June 20 while applying a tag on Atlanta's A.J. Pierzynski at Turner Field on a play at the plate.

D'Arnaud's rehab assignment originally was scheduled to begin Thursday with Class A St. Lucie, but the Florida State League club was rained out on consecutive days.

NEW YORK -- Travis d'Arnaud went 2-for-5 with a run scored and strikeout as the designated hitter for Double-A Binghamton in an 8-0 win at Trenton on Sunday.

D'Arnaud had caught five innings, and went 1 for 3 on Saturday with the B-Mets as his rehab assignment officially began.

D'Arnaud should be activated from the disabled list later this week, although he likely will need to first catch a full game in the minors.

NEW YORK -- Sunday's victory against the Los Angeles Dodgers felt like October to Juan Uribe.

Uribe smoked a single off the wall in left-center against Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen to plate Curtis Granderson and the New York Mets produced a walk-off 3-2 win in 10 innings at Citi Field to earn a split of the four-game series.

"I think in this moment, it's like when you play in the playoffs, in the World Series, and you win it," said Uribe, who joined the Mets on Saturday after being acquired from the Atlanta Braves with Kelly Johnson for two minor league pitchers.

Uribe delivered his 10th career walk-off RBI. His last came in the 11th inning on Aug. 14, 2010, for the San Francisco Giants against San Diego Padres right-hander Tim Stauffer.

Sunday's shot capped a big weekend for Mets newcomers. Rookie Michael Conforto had a 4-for-4 performance and Johnson homered in his Mets debut on Saturday.

The Mets salvaged a game on Sunday in which closer Jeurys Familia failed to hold a two-run lead in the ninth inning. The Amazin's gained a game on the first-place Washington Nationals. Despite going an underwhelming 4-6 during their second-half-opening gauntlet against three straight first-place teams, the Mets sit in the same spot as they did entering the All-Star break -- two games behind the Nats.

"For me every game you win is important for the team," Uribe said. "Washington lost today. When you see the other team you're fighting for the division loses, you have to win."

In the bottom of the 10th, Granderson hustled for a leadoff double against reliever Juan Nicasio. After Ruben Tejada popped out on a bunt attempt, the Dodgers intentionally walked Daniel Murphy with first base open to bring up Uribe. Jansen entered and surrendered the game-ending drive to Uribe, who pelted the ball off the left-center wall, narrowly shy of the home run line.

While Johnson has started both games at second base since joining the Mets, Uribe has come off the bench in his two games as a Met. That might change as soon as Tuesday against the San Diego Padres. Manager Terry Collins has mentioned wanting to give Tejada a day off, which could lead to Murphy at second base and Wilmer Flores with a cameo back at shortstop.

"I'll be here for whatever the manager needs -- for pinch hits, for my defense," Uribe said. "I don't say, 'Oh, I want to play every day.' No, no, no."

Asked about the potential of the Mets, Uribe noted he was on a 2005 Chicago White Sox team that swept the Houston Astros to win the World Series. He suggested that came as a surprise to some people.

"It's a good team," Uribe said about the Mets. "In baseball, you never know."

Td'A could be back for the Nats series later this week....

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Travis d'Arnaud went 1-for-3 with a single and double-play groundout and logged seven innings at catcher for Double-A Binghamton on Monday against New Britain.

D'Arnaud had caught five innings on Saturday and served as the DH on Sunday for the B-Mets at Trenton.

He expects to catch a full game on Tuesday. D'Arnaud should be ready for activation no later than next weekend's showdown with the Washington Nationals at Citi Field.

"I feel great, and I'm excited to get back whenever they feel like I'm ready," d'Arnaud said Monday.

D'Arnaud suffered a sprained left elbow on June 20 at Turner Field while applying a tag at the plate on A.J. Pierzynski.

"I thought it was going to be worse, honestly, when it happened," d'Arnaud said. "A.J.'s a big guy. When it happened, I felt like my whole arm -- my elbow, my everything -- when I lifted it up, I thought it was going to be dangling the opposite way. I'm actually happy it was this."
