FORT MYERS, Fla. (8/6) -- Michael Cuddyer's initial prediction of a return from the disabled list for Friday's series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays may have been too optimistic.

The New York Mets now may wait until Monday to activate Cuddyer from the disabled list.

Cuddyer took batting practice with David Wright at the organization's complex in Port St. Lucie, Florida, on Thursday. Cuddyer had been expected to play in a Gulf Coast League game on Thursday, but now is expected to begin that rehab assignment on Friday with Class A St. Lucie.

Cuddyer is working back from a bone bruise below his left kneecap. He last appeared in a game when he pinch hit for the Mets on July 21.

Odorizzi has a 1.40 ERA at the Trop this season so doubtful the Mets will tee off on the Rays' pitching like they did with the AAA Marlins.... As with a lot of Ray games this will probably be one of those 2-1 or 3-2 type of games with either a goofup by a reliever or an unearned run being the difference.

Sandy Alderson: Development can wait;
Mets to keep top 25.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.(8/9) -- Maybe rookie Michael Conforto will not have to pack his bags for Triple-A Las Vegas just yet with Michael Cuddyer poised to be activated from the disabled list on Monday.

General manager Sandy Alderson indicated after Sunday's rubber-game loss to the Tampa Bay Rays that ensuring playing time for young players to develop is secondary to having the best 25 players on the major league roster with the Mets in a pennant race.

So perhaps Eric Campbell will get shipped to Vegas instead of Conforto. Alderson said he has a good idea what move he wants to make, but the Mets will not announce a decision until Monday.

"Our mindset is we want the best 25 players we can put on the field," Alderson said. "Issues of development, etc., are secondary to whether anybody can help us now. That's all relative based on who's doing what and comparisons among players."

Conforto, 22, has held his own at the major league level, despite Sunday's 0-for-4 performance that included two strikeouts. That dropped his average to .222 (8-for-36) with one homer, eight RBIs and a .326 on-base percentage. Four of the hits came in one game, on July 25 against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Conforto may see limited playing time if he remains. The Mets are facing two left-handers in the upcoming four-game series against the Colorado Rockies and will have fellow outfielders Yoenis Cespedes, Juan Lagares, Curtis Granderson, Cuddyer and Kelly Johnson active.

Campbell also becomes somewhat expendable if Juan Uribe and Cuddyer are on the bench as pinch hitters. Campbell does have three hits in his last four pinch-hit opportunities, with two game-winning RBIs (at Washington on July 21 and at Miami last Tuesday). He nonetheless is hitting .170 (18-for-106) in 44 games since returning from the minors on May 16.

NEW YORK (8/14) -- New York Mets rookie left-hander Steven Matz is set to begin a rehab assignment with Class A St. Lucie on Saturday at Jupiter.

Matz is only slated to throw 25 pitches in the game and another 15 in the bullpen afterward as he returns from a lat strain.

Manager Terry Collins acknowledged it will be a couple of weeks before Matz returns to the majors and the Mets shift to a six-man rotation.

Matz likely will have two more minor league starts with increased pitch counts before being activated from the DL after rosters expand on Sept. 1.

Matz last pitched in a game on July 5, when he threw six scoreless innings on the road against the Los Angeles Dodgers in his second major league start.

Matz should be playing in the same rehab game as David Wright, who is slated to play seven innings on Friday night with St. Lucie and then DH on Saturday....and possibly OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis, who is also on rehab assignment.

The original script had Wright playing three straight days beginning Thursday, but that game was suspended in the bottom of the first because of rain.

Collins said the Mets would consider moving Wright to another minor-league team if rain continued to disrupt his rehab in Florida.

NEW YORK (8/17)-- If things continue to go according to plan, the New York Mets expect to welcome David Wright back to the majors during a four-game series at Philadelphia that begins next Monday.

Wright is 4-for-14 with two walks and three strikeouts through four rehab games with Class A St. Lucie as he works back from spinal stenosis in his lower back. He has played in three games at third base and committed two errors.

With St. Lucie playing across the state in Bradenton on Sunday and Monday, Wright took a two-day break from Florida State League games. He is expected to resume his rehab assignment with the club on Tuesday, when the team returns to Port St. Lucie.

Wright is likely to remain with St. Lucie for the duration of his rehab assignment.

=====================================

NEW YORK -- Rafael Montero's rehab assignment on Sunday apparently did not go entirely as planned.

Although Montero completed three innings in a start for Class A St. Lucie, the right-hander was unable to go the scripted length and will be unable to help the New York Mets in either a starting or relief capacity anytime soon.

Montero has been dealing with what has been labeled rotator-cuff inflammation since he landed on the disabled list in late April.

==========================================

Mets seemingly started Erik Goeddel's rehab Aug. 2 with an eye toward keeping him in the minors until Sept. 1. Now the Mets are saying he may return to the big league roster sooner.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis' rehab assignment has shifted from St. Lucie to Las Vegas. #mets

Adam Rubin, ESPN Staff Writer:
(Aug.18)

The New York Mets do not intend to shut down any of their starting pitchers for the postseason, but that does not mean the organization is comfortable letting them blow past prescribed innings limits, either.

So team officials currently are crafting a plan to allow for extra rest for their pitchers in September without compromising their ability to hold off the Washington Nationals.

The primary facet of the plan hinges on Steven Matz returning after rosters expand on Sept. 1 and the use of a six-man rotation.

If healthy, Steven Matz will play a key role in the Mets' rotation in September.

Logan Verrett, due to join the Mets on Tuesday in Baltimore for relief work, likely will get a spot start or two in September as well with a marquee starter skipped.

Matz has made one rehab start with Class A St. Lucie so far as he works back from a lat strain.

Returning from Tommy John surgery, Matt Harvey already has logged 154 innings this season through 118 games. That’s on pace for 211 innings -- seemingly about 15 or so more than the maximum desired regular-season workload.

Noah Syndergaard already has logged 135 1/3 innings this season between the majors and minors. Including the playoffs and Futures Game in 2014, Syndergaard tossed 138 innings. Typically, a 30- to 35-inning jump year over year is the maximum desirable.

There appears to be less urgency in shaving innings with Jacob deGrom. He is at 146 2/3 innings this season. He logged 178 2/3 innings a year ago between the majors and minors.

Of course, in 2007, the Mets diluted their rotation down the stretch to give Pedro Martinez extra rest. Brian Lawrence had a 6.83 ERA in six starts in August and September of that year. Philip Humber lasted only four innings and suffered a loss in Game No. 158 of the season. The result? The Mets missed the playoffs, despite holding a seven-game lead with 17 play.

Mets officials suggest that this time is different, because using Matz is not exactly diluting the rotation and because the Verrett spot start(s) in order to skip pitchers should be extremely limited.

Anybody know the status of our injured pitchers? I believe Montero is done for the year with multiple setbacks in his recovery. Vic Black? Dillon Gee? I believe Matz is getting close. All of these guys would be welcome additions to the bullpen.

Matz will be recalled on Sept 1 or sooner.....Montero has numerous issues (some physical & mental) unfortunately.

Gee could be called up too as a spot starter or BP add on. We'll see.

  • A scout offered this assessment of Las Vegas reliever Vic Black: “Black’s stuff is there, but still too many walks. It’s hard to square up when he’s in or near the zone.” Black has walked 17 in 20 innings with the L.V. 51s this season.

Rats....

The Nats came back to beat the Rox, about an hour after the Mets BP coughed one up to the O's.

Division lead down to 3.5 games.

Mets have an off day tomorrow, before starting a weekend 3 gamer in Denver on Friday.

Looks like Puello turned into a bust.....

New York - (8/19)-- Outfielder Cesar Puello has been released by the New York Mets.

Puello, 24, had cleared waivers, was removed from the 40-man roster and assigned to Triple-A Las Vegas on the eve of the regular season. However, he complained of back discomfort and the Mets were forced to rescind the move. Instead, Puello spent the last four-plus months on the disabled list collecting major league pay and service time.

He resurfaced in the Gulf Coast League on July 27 for one rehab appearance before complaining of more back discomfort.

Puello served a 50-game suspension in 2013 related to the Biogenesis scandal.

He hit .252 with seven homers and 37 RBIs in 318 at-bats in 2014 with Las Vegas after returning from the suspension.
