saying that he's useless is an exaggeration. he's outmatched by decent starting guards, but he's not useless.

He was a second round pick FFS..... We shouldn't use second round picks on guys that suck. In consecutive years we chose Still and Hunt to add to an already good line. Both are busts. In the third round this year we picked former Giants first basemen Will Clarke -- He'll probably suck too.

Peko has always stunk according to PFF. He's playing the exact same way he's played his entire career here. He and Geathers are on payroll because they are 100% loyal to Marvin Lewis. They are employees for life.

Gilberry is an excellent pass-rusher when he doesn't have to play every down. I expect he'd still be good at it if he played much less.

Dunlap is an amazing athlete that only tries part of the time. He's never changed. Seemed better last year though.

MJ played 90% of the plays when he was active -- I don't think our line was dominant because of one guy.....But having a lot of above average players rotating in and out of the game made us really hard to beat and basically shielded us from losing too much when a guy (like Atkins) got injured. If you look at the line now, we have very serious questions going into next season. We have two good starters that haven't had great years (Atkins and Dunlap), one run-stuffing specialist (Thompson), two Marvin soldiers (Peko and Geathers), a situational pass rusher (Gilberry) and a couple of busts. We need to draft a DE or DT.

Agreed with just about everything here.

none of that supports the dictation that he is useless.

he's a warm body that plays DT near the pro level, but not quite good enough to be an every day starter, an insurance policy. he's like Jordan Palmer, only at DT instead of QB. If Jordan Palmer is your starting QB, you can pretty much assume you aren't going to win a game, but still, you need someone like him to be your 3rd string QB (if your roster allows) in case your top 2 go down... , the good ones are already taken.

that's what you expect from a backup who you originally planned to be on your practice squad.

I don't know why this is so hard to understand. "useless" is an unintelligent exaggeration.
"useless" literally means that you are better of going with 10 men on defense and just have a 3 man DL
that's fuckin stupid, wake up.

you are basically refuting things I never even said at this point.

I think his point was...he was a 2nd round pick. When you draft guys in the 2nd or 3rd rounds, you aren't looking for them to be sub-par backups, but be able to give meaningful minutes when called upon. Not a super star, but not grading out negatively every game, either. Especially after several years on the roster.

I had a hard time believing he was a 2nd round pick for our team...
looked it up, yep... 2nd round pick, 2012

I suppose real life distractions kept him from honing his craft. that does happen. I don't believe he'll be hear after this year, unless he's a scout or something.

I can't imagine what he has gone through over the past year.... And I hope the best for him and his family.

From a football standpoint, he wasn't very good before his daughter got cancer -- There was a pretty telling scene on Hard Knocks in which Zimmer asked him why he was satisfied with being a backup.

talent vs motivation

some people ride their talent, and others struggle through life using motivation
the truly great have both

I guarantee that Marvin has printed that either on a t-shirt or in the weight room.

Tits McGee didn't practice yesterday. More Newhouse!

No practice for Tits today..... As if Andy didn't suck enough on his own, now he goes to work with the worst tackle in the league.

If you like to gamble, put money on the Saints this week. This game will be over at the half.

I do. Zimmer has Minnesota's line looking great as well.
