I think anyone hoping for improvements from the D should reconsider. Tez will probably be out more than this week given that he's not even rehabbing yet.
No Tez = No Hope. Regarding the D anyways.
Paulie G threatened jobs this week...... We'll see how far that goes.
How the hell is he going to play with 6 players on defense?
Who are the 6 players who are doing well?
This is a fair question. Name the 6 defensive players that don't suck this year.
Go.
I'll take Nelson, PacMan, Brandon Thompson (when healthy), George Iloka (75% of the time) and.....
The secondary has played very well. All 4/5 starters (if you want to include slot CB) have played lights out against the pass per the DVOA, or whatever they call it.
Thompson I think has done well when healthy, and Atkins has played really well the past few weeks, though I don't know what his PFF grade was against the Browns. He's rounding back into form.
The problems I see from the defense: DL is not taking up space or getting to the QB at the same rate. This isn't just a MJ left deal...Atkins took 5-6+ games to start rounding into form, and Thompson missed 4-5 games. Peko is one of the worst rated DL in all of football, per PFF. With Atkins struggling to regain form, less depth along the DL, and poor play from Peko, I think teams have been able to chip/double and scheme to keep guys like Gilberry and Dunlap from getting to the QB as much. Add in less depth, and more snaps for lower tier players...
Then add in all the LB injuries on top of that. It's no wonder things are ugly. The DL and LB will have to be addressed in FA/draft.
We will probably have to get a DE no doubt. However, I like Dunlap on the outside, I like Atkins and Thompson on the inside, I actually am not upset with our LB's when healthy, Lamur, Maualuga and Burfict, and our secondary, while hold, has done well. Also, best pair of safeties we have had since Fulcher and Williams.
Yes, losing Johnson obviously hurt, but I was not shocked by it either. It could be Johnson here instead of Dunlap, as whoever caved to the money first got the contract. Dunlap did, Johnson wanted more. Besides, I think Johnson just wanted to go back closer to home anyways.
Drago has been disappointing, and Gilberry is not a starter I guess, but an excellent rotation lineman with a good motor. We are obviously missing Johnson, but I understood why they didn't sign him. We better get Green locked up, or things are going to start looking a lot worse around here. I am a little concerned he disappears in big games too though, just like Chad Johsnon did. I don't know if that is 1 of three things though, 1) is that on Green, 2) is that on Dalton not getting him the ball, or 3) a combination of both? Green gets blanketed against Haden like Haden was trying to put out a fire.
Don't forget that Still, while a nice story, is essentially useless on the field
HE'S A BACK UP, a 3rd stringer at that.
he's doing what 3rd stringers do.
