Injuries or no injuries, the NFL still needs the preseason

Injuries are part of the game. They are unfortunate but a part of the game. Teams need preseason games to evaluate the 90 players on their teams. I understand that when someone goes down it's horrible, but that's why the get paid what they do. Honestly, it sucks when anyone gets hurt but to say that the preseason isn't necessary is uninformed. Ask any of the coaches. Also, I often wonder about no contact injuries like Nelson's and whether or not the ligament was going to snap anyway. Maybe it was just weakened to the point already. Who Knows?

Nope.

At least not in its current format. It's not played for the sake of practice, it's played to make the owners money. Keep in mind the players don't get paid for these games.

Most of the "players" don't play much. Don't want injuries to your players - keep them off the field.
Shoot with 47 players that won't make the cut, there are plenty to evaluate without putting a lot of wear and tear on your starters.....

I'm ok with a version of that. Leave the preseason to the players who need to showcase their wears, not the ones already guaranteed roster spots.

Actually it's both. Why do you think the coaches are constantly going over game film. It's to evaluate the players in game situations. The preseason maybe not be interesting to the fans but it's hugely important to the coaches and the sake of the team.

It's overrated.

No. They only need two games at most.

Of the 30+ extra players on the roster, only about 5-10 are playing for a roster spot. Coaches know going into preseason week one who are likely going to make 48 out 53 roster spots. Is it really worth the injury risk for 5 roster spots, keeping in mind that teams only dress 46 players on game day?

The preseason goes a long way in teams filling out their rosters. It also helps many who are cut by team A to be picked up by team B.

Injuries suck, but preseason is needed.

85% of the preseason is looking at unproven talent.

I guess it's the pressure of paying 'fans' that means Jordy Nelson, e.g., needs to even step on the field today, or just that old foe 'well this is the way we've always done it'.

If I was the coach, I wouldnt play my proven stars at all (those guys can get acclimated in game one), except for defensive players and offensive lineman, who need some game speed action to get into shape. It would take my boss making me do it, only way I would.

I like watching the starters but if Dallas only had the starters play a series all preseason, I wouldn't complain too much.

absolutely. Of course we want to see them play, but in the preseason, at what cost? Almost have to look at it like ROI or return on investment.

here's a case in point: Romo should NOT play at all in this game. I agree with this tweeter

Evaluating talent in "game speed" conditions is necessary.

There are way too many player who have participated in a shit ton of pre-season games/plays and didn't get hurt to even use this as a crutch.

And BTW, the players do in fact get paid for these "exhibitions". They just get the money for the entire season in 16 increments, not 20.

I can't figure out if

A) Players are getting hurt because there's too many workout camps so they never properly rest.

B) Players are getting hurt because those workout camps aren't at full speed so they aren't conditioned for hits, meaning they're going from 10% effort to 100% and getting hurt

C) Injuries just happen and no one bothered to track this shit till a handful of years ago

All I know is this is why I wait till week 4 of preseason before I do fantasy drafts

The veterans get enough reps in practice and it's really the rookies and free agents that need the playing time. Why not wait until the final preseason game to play the starters as these games mean nothing.
