By the same token, myself and others have a fairly decent grasp of 1 and 2 gap schemes. It's just we see it plain as day that it's not working.

I think it's just a perfect storm of issues right now. Inexperience, low effort, hesitance, poor conditioning, poor chemistry, poor coaching etc. The list goes on and on.

The thing they can control the most is effort and attitude. It's just not there right now. I don't know if a scheme even exists right now that could get these guys playing better. If u can't get off blocks then there isn't a Scheme in the world u will play well in.

My point was people need to stop attacking what the man said. Bo is ripe for criticism as far as I'm concerned, he's playing the wrong players, and sticking to a scheme that isn't working (even though it DOES work). My point was that Bo's comments on the 2-gap were right, and not worth belly aching over.

My point is that Bo does KNOW defense, he's just too stubborn to cede when it isn't working. Thad Randle is one of the worst 2-gap tackles on our roster yet he gets a majority of snaps, and Kevin Maurice and VV are the best 2-gap tackles and Maurice gets little to no looks. It's about personnel and development, not the scheme IMO.

Heck we were calling high school defenses (man-under, single gap, or quarters coverage) and our players couldn't execute it. It's maddening. So in reality, I know people don't want to hear it, but it doesn't matter if we run single gap, 2-gap or 3-technique, until these players can start playing within a given scheme and actually make plays this defense will look putrid.

And yes, that all comes back to coaching. Play the right players, limit the defensive play book, call more blitzes and play more simple zone or man to man coverage. The players actually DO understand the defense IMO, it's just that they have to think about step 1, step 2, step 3 so much instead of just putting the foot in the ground letting it come naturally that they are a step slow to the hole... which gives up massive yardage in both the single and 2-gap schemes.

Not sure what it takes to fix other than more reps and more reps and more reps. IMO, the coaching staff should get a starting 11 and a second 11 and rep em to death together these next two weeks. Beat it into them until it's second nature.

I think we'll look pretty good against both Illinois and Purdue, then we have another BYE week before taking on Minnesota. We have that time to fix it. I hope it gets done. I do agree that Bo will likely add more to it as the season goes on and the players get comfortable. I'm all for competition but guys need to play with each other a lot to trust each other and lean on each other. It's time to cut the crap and name starters. Get Randle off the field.

I went back and looked at the defense again specifically paying attention to run fits and it really is a combination of 3 major problems. 1. Bursting off the line when the ball is snapped. Thad is consistently dead last off the line and it's not even like he's stunting. The pic irule posted... There were like 15 snaps I saw in the first half alone where u could replicate that still image. Idl wtf that's about.

2. LB's consistently choosing the wrong gap to fill even when it's blatantly obvious which way the play is flowing. I'm wondering if Santos doesn't need his vision checked. He is so unaware at times it's scary. On top of that when he goes the wrong way there's often a guard there to meet him and take him out of the play entirely. Which leads me to my third point...

It's either one thing or the other that goes wrong for our DTs on any given play: The good 2 gappers that FBnut alluded to often shoot straight through the line and run past the play, stumbling clumsily and losing their balance in the backfield as if they didn't anticipate it being so easy to beat their man. By the time they recover and run to the ball it's too late. The bad 2 gappers which FBnut also alluded to do the dancing bear patty cake routine and RBs blow past them bc 1. They can't get off their blocks and 2. They misdiagnosed which way the play was flowing.


That is my extremely amateur analysis but it makes sense in my head.

Bo is lost on what to do with these guys and that's a pure coaching issue, he knows Defense, I don't doubt that, he doesn't know how to teach it very well to the players he recruited, that's what I'm left with. Coach Kaz Does Know How To Coach DLine, he's Bona-Fide. Who and why is and are, preventing Coach K from getting this done, we did hire him and all to do a specific job
