Let me say this from jump, unless I'm totally misreading the intentions of Scott McCloughan and company Washington will go through hell and high water in attempting to sign Kirk Cousins to a new contract. The natural question that follows is....what happens if they cannot reach an accord?

Well for starters, they absolutely cannot use another franchise tag on him and here's why. It simply isn't a smart move. Using the franchise tag for a second time assures the effective pricing out of their QB because the 2018 tag number reaches an astounding $34+million dollars. No team can afford that and the likely hood of Cousins and his team settling for less than the current $24 million annually doesn't seem to be the smart thing for them to do either. Remember this is all based upon Kirk and his reps asking for more than DC is willing to pay.

So, what's the move here?

Washington, failing to sign Cousins before March 15 sends him into free agency without compensation, but if, and that seems to be a gigantic IF they cannot come to terms with him in the interim, they must employ the Non Exclusive Franchise tag and here's why. It's the smartest move that they could make in order to protect themselves from losing him without the option of matching the offer or gaining compensation.

For the record:

A non-exclusive Franchise Tag, allows the player to negotiate contracts with other teams and their current team is given the right to match whatever contract they sign, if the team losing that player decides not to match the contract they are given two first-round picks as compensation.

It would be by far the smartest move DC could make under those circumstances.

Here are seven ways the Redskins-Kirk Cousins contract negotiations could play out

Again - here are all of the options for the Cousins situation. I actually kind of think that scenario 3 here may play out. Here it is:

Scenario No. 3 — If the two sides can’t agree on a long-term deal by Feb. 15, the Redskins prevent Cousins from going elsewhere by using the NFL’s exclusive franchise tag during the permissible window, Feb. 15 through March 1. The exclusive franchise tag prevents Cousins from negotiating with other teams while “buying time” for the Redskins and Cousins to reach a long-term deal by July 15.

Scenario 3B — The Redskins and Cousins reach a long-term deal by the July 15 deadline, which replaces the exclusive franchise tag the moment Cousins signs it.

Keep this in mind if he is tagged in this manner early in the process. It may be simply be a situation where they are working out a long term deal but just buying a little time. Both sides may actually be agreeable to this situation if they are reasonably close to being in agreement & knowing that a long term deal will be made.
