IF he offers the Luck deal I think Kirk takes it. Some posters on here think he is only worth the Pablo deal of $16M a year though and if he wants real starter money, well we should let him walk or tag him and draft the next great thing.. .which isnt in this draft by the way.

I hope so too that he takes the Luck deal. We will see how it goes.

There is a rub. To distill this to its pure essence, we shit the bed with Kirk. We should've signed him long term last season, but basically disrespected him in process of lowballing him with a $16M AAV deal before tagging him. Then, right after tagging him, Houston gives Osweiler an $18M AAV contract. Kirk must've been fuming then. but we had a chance to still sign him but didn't budge from our original $16M AAV deal. Kirk bet on himself and took all the injury risk playing under the tag.

As everyone say this year, he won that bet in spades. So, now we're in a huge bind. We simply can't let Kirk walk. But we also don't want to overspend. However, we don't have a choice. Joel Corry estimated that Kirk could get a $26.5M AAV deal with $90M guaranteed on the open market. Because we need to sign him, we've got to give the Luck deal. It's not ideal, but we simply have got no choice. And whether he's "worth" it is beside the point. When you have to pay market value for something you need, you often have to overpay. And sometimes you have to overpay a whole lot. That's where we stand now. We should come to a deal sooner rather than later since Kirk's price will only go up from now on out.

Best statement I have seen "we shit the bed with Kirk." We gave up 4 starters for Griffin yet drafted Cousins. That was the first time we soiled our drawers. Cousins (minus one year in the spread option) was better than Griffin from day one. We should have offered him a contract in week 8 last year at a lower number. Maybe even earlier. We crapped our drawers again. He should have been signed long term before this year at the going rate. Three shits and you are out. There were numerous chances to get him at a lower price. Each time Scott, Bruce and Dan got caught with their junk in their hands.

There is no rub. It all depends on what KC demands.
Why? Why does it depend on what KC demands? Either he is your QB or he is not. If you dont think he is, then he isn't worth a dime. IF you think he is, then pay him like he is a franchise QB. Its that simple.

So you believe he deserves a blank check?

Sure. Why not. It's not my money. Sometimes, Dean, what you read vs what is written is almost laughable if it didn't happen almost in every thread.

Please show me one post where anyone on this board said give him a blank check? Please read, for the first time apparently, what I wrote.

you said pay him as a franchise qb. You are so vague. He might want to be the highest paid qb in the league.

What's vague about that and just for curiosity sake, how does your mind work so that that you interpreted that to mean blank check?

I asked you that. You say pay him but don't give any numbers to backup your claim. Once again just vague.

Dude you are entirely too fixated on hat he might want. And again if the team can give him what he wants and still manage to do the other things we need.... Aside from the fact that he doesnt fit into your vision of an elite QB... whats the problem??

How much is it worth to NOT be in the position of likely making another bone headed trade for a QB??

Lets say Kirk never progresses to the Superman elite level carry a team on his back type of QB.... is it really worth going back into the QB hunt mode because oh we might over pay him when its not your money, and we can actually afford to do the deal??

Well Dean, that's because I don't know the numbers. But I would take the lat 3-5 franchise QB deals and use those to structure my proposal. I would not include any QB that I considered elite in that analysis (Brady and Rodgers). Does that help?

Its better but we don't know what will be offered from both sides. I say give him the Luck deal but what if he wants more? See jy I give you specifics not say just pay him. lol

Yes, I already said give him the Luck deal, which is a franchise QB money. If he wants more or much more than I would have to hesitate and explore all options.

So what if he demands $1m/year over the luck deal for 5 years? Would you do it?

Ok, so that is in line with what almost every one is saying to pay him. So what's the problem?

I don't have a problem. We don't know the numbers yet. So we can't really argue this at all. SM Is going to give him an offer.

An outsider take.

1st off...I thought the FO made the right move to franchise Cousins off his one year sample. I think the FO knew what the risks were just as I and most of you did. If he plays well again, the price would go up....well, he played well again. If you were one of those guys that said sign him long term LY...okay...you were right, but that's water under the bridge now.

In today's NFL at the QB position...it's not really about winning significant games to earn the big contract anymore. If you prove you can consistently move the ball and put up points over the 16 game season...you're deemed worthy of the money. He's clearly done that.

The question of how much? For me...Luck's deal is is steep, but fair market. At the same time it's a 2016 deal and now it's 2017 so I can see him going slightly higher than Luck. Cousins is 28 already so this deal is going to take him to retirement basically. If tries to max out you can't blame him, but making a ton a cash and being a non-playoff team hopefully is not what he wants.

The FO has a say, but as many of of you have said...it's Kirk call really.
