Pretty sure this is all going to be moot when the virus explodes again, like, next week, to an even more catastrophic level. Can't imagine the Players' Association being too keen on getting back to work in potentially life-threatening environment, no matter how much the guys love to play.

That said, whatever format they try--if it's safe to at all--will be fine. It's going to be crappy hockey, but it'll be hockey.

I know that, but they also want to protect their rights in the league. Loving to play didn't stop lock-outs, after all.

My idea is that each division forms an "all-star" team from players from that division. The Atlantic plays the Metropolitan in a best of 7 and the Pacific plays the Centrum in a best of 7 series. Then the two winners finish it off with a best of 7. Now the fun part, whatever division wins - all the teams in that division can celebrate and get credit for winning the cup! Right after the on ice celebration the Cup will be chainsawed into 8 different pieces so each team has a piece. It will be great! Even more fun is they can award a new trophy next year, wow! No more stale old cup.

They're certainly less predictable than, for example, the MLBPA, but I think if you strip out the toughness-on-the-ice aspect as a pandemic does, and add in the risk to their families, that they're unlikely to agree to play if there's another explosion of outbreaks.
