I looked at some YouTube videos of Ichiro taking BP and he would hit HRs maybe 10 rows deep...incongruous for a slap hitter, but nothing special. Show me some video of Ichiro hitting the ball over 450 feet in BP and I might take him more seriously as a HR Derby guy.
Now, Mark Reynolds...that's a guy to watch in BP. Never got to see guys like McGwire or even Ortiz in BP, but the best individual session I ever saw in person was JD Drew when he was with the Cards and they visited Boston...effortless 450 foot shots one after another, smooth swing with no extra BP muscle added. JD had lost that ability by the time he joined Boston.
BTW, this is the least fanfare for a 3000 hit guy that I've seen in my lifetime...guess Yount was also pretty quiet, but even that was a pretty big deal compared to the relative silence around Ichiro's accomplishment.
