That is what I'm thinking. When I was trying to get my old PS2 hooked up years ago that damn crossover cable was the reason I couldn't get it to work. Finally after figuring out what they were talking about when checking the "colors" I found a cable I needed and it all worked perfectly.
There was a time crossover cables were a necessity though because most routers/switches didn't have built in crossover linking for connecting.
