I'm happy they stayed with their board. If Fowler or Amari had been there, this would be a different discussion.

Thrilled to have a MAN in charge.

Yep. And the trolling would have been of a different variety. :)

Gotta give credit where it's due. Shark and Skinsdad called it. Well done you two :suds:

I'm not sure there's a winner or loser here. There's a difference between picking who fits where on a big board and what player a particular GM will pick. Those are two very different inquiries. For instance, some Redskin fan was pounding his chest saying that he got it "right" when predicting that Cerrato would pick Malcolm Kelly in 2008 when the issue we were debating was what the right pick should have been. Not sure what point he was trying to make back then when Cerrato passed on players like Jordy Nelson, Jamaal Charles, and Desean Jackson.

Still, I'm happy with this pick, especially because he's being chosen as a RT.

For me, I could give two shits who is 'right'.

It's all opinions and they are not going to be the same.

But there is no debate that both Dad and Shark called the Scherff pick at 5.

All I care about is a solid impact player for the Skins myself.

Agreed. All I'm saying is that it's one thing to rank players on a big board, on the one hand, and to predict where those players will actually be picked, on the other. For instance, Laken Tomlinson was picked at #22 by the Lions. Never would have guessed that, but predicting that pick would fall into the latter of the two lines of inquiry I just mentioned.

Mock drafts don't mean shit and are impossible to get right, big boards are much better

Of course mocks are difficult to predict, Hell they are impossible to predict. But let's not go overboard on them just yet. They did have the top 2 picks right and most had the top 3 right. And nearly all of them had 4 out of the first 5 players picked correct, they just weren't in the exact order which is understandable.

As for the pick as I said in the other thread still not crazy about it. A top 5 OL to me should play LT and have no holes. Instead we took a guy who we hope can convert to right tackle and we are now trying to protect a bad pocket passer with a guy who by his own admission needs work in pass pro. A top 5 OL pick should not have any holes in his game IMO. Still as I said all month he will be a pretty safe bet to be a damn solid pro for 15 years and I fully support our GM so I'll support this pick. And of course RT was our most glaring need.

Not going there. You got your guy and now he's our guy. So as I said I'll support the pick and hope we find a pass rusher later in the draft.

Not to rehash this, Scherff came in with more holes than you'd like at fifth overall. For that reason, a lot of the buzz this morning is talking about how we overdrafted him. Having said that, the first round is behind us and, if he's playing RT, we not only filled our biggest need but we immediately got a huge upgrade at that position. With Callahan's coaching, I'm confident that he can sew the holes up.

Also, not that this should matter at all, but we kept a division rival from selecting Scherff at a place in the draft where his value would be perfect. That rival, the Giants, really reached by drafting Ereck Flowers with their ninth pick, and, if you want to talk holes and issues with pass protection, take a look at that guy.

the only reason anyone is saying we over drafted him is virtually everyone was wrong and come hell or high water we were picking a pass rusher instead of listening to what our GM was saying

now they are trying to save face

How are they wrong on the overdrafting issue? I think they're right on that. The issue is about worth. Was it worth it to overdraft him like the Cowboys did with Martin last year? We shall see, but I'm not complaining. We didn't overdraft nearly as much as the Cowboys did.

I'm trying to take the high road here but you sure are making it difficult. We all thought they would take a pass rusher because we believed SM when he said he would take the best player on his board and none of us felt Scherff would be that guy. We are now learning that SM's board had, in order, Fowler, Cooper and Scherff. So he did what he said he would do, and what we said he would do, and took the BPA according to his board. My surprise is that he had Scherff rated that highly
