over a 6.6 era in spring training. He looks worse than last year if possible. San Fran should just say good bye to the money they paid for him and what they will have to pay him and get someone else as a 5th starter. Heck almost any rookie will be better than that asshat.

There's your key; he'll be in the top 5 #5 starters by the end of the year.

Bruce Lee, the hawk, will be on duty during Zito's AT&T starts.

Now over 7.7 era

His fastball which has been slow at 85-87 the last 2 seasons is even slower now. Dude is done. can't even get out of the 3rd inning a week before opening day.

IIRC, BZ is due like $19 million in 2012, $20 million in 2013, with a $7 million buyout for 2014.

I know I'm just dreaming, but how much do you think he would take to retire today?

Would he take a $30 million dollar check to leave today? $35 million? Would the MLBPA even allow that?

Just throwing that out there for discussion.

Short answer is no. But, [Sabean] at the end of the day [/Sabean], Zito is free to do whatever he wants. You're basically asking what value Zito places on starting his next career immediately. Interesting question, but I don't think he's ready to admit failure yet.

The union would throw a shit-fit if this happened, but Zito could still do it. There was the Royals pitcher a couple years ago who did just that...

Yes, I said this in my second sentence. I'm not a lawyer, but the CBA contains language that gives the union control over situations like this, but my intuition tells me it's not enforceable - at the end of the day. Way to mess up my short answer......

Grant Bisbee April 1 2008:

Today's post was in the can long before Barry Zito made his first start. It would have helped my case if Zito pitched well, but I'm sticking with the theme:

I'm glad the Giants signed Barry Zito. I love that he's on the team, and I love that he's a part of this team's future. Let me count the ways:

1. He'll get better. He just needs to learn to pitch with an 85-mph fastball. The curve and change are there, so he just needs to spot his fastball better. Zito's approaching wily veteran status; he'll receive his spot-his-fastball-better tonic after the post-ceremony party.

2. He'll stay healthy. When a player has good health in his youth, it usually means he'll continue with similar luck through his thirties. Even if Zito is a league-average pitcher, he'll have value for the next five years. But I think he'll be better, as....

3. He's a former Cy Young winner. That's a pretty exclusive club, and they don't just hand those things out. The only difference between that Zito and the current Zito is about four miles per hour. That's it. How much difference can that make? He'll learn to overcome his velocity and control problems.

I've been wanting to come out against the Zito-grumblers for a long time. He had a down year last season, but so what? He'll be back, and y'all will look pretty silly when Zito is a 17-game winner in 2012. The salary won't be a concern, as the Giants will develop enough good position players to keep payroll down.

I'm not worried at all.

Nice april fools day article.

The Royals pitcher gave up $12mil, Zito has 4 times that on the line...

He wouldn't. I'm pretty sure he still loves being an ML ballplayer and would relish the chance to start over somewhere else with no contract hanging over his head. If we cut him, some team like Minnesota or KC would pick him up for the minimum.

This isn't the NBA; players don't get bought out at less than contract value. Instead, they get RoRo'd.

I say give him a few starts and if he implodes, get him off the 25 any which way they please. DFA, trade, DL, whatever. One thing I don't think they should do is let a spring training performance be the final dictation of a 46 million dollar decision.

There's a big difference between the KC guy (I also forgot his name) and what has been proposed about Zito. The KC guy straight retired and left all the money on the table. Zito negotiating a buyout/severence package would be unprecedented, as in, it's never happened before.

As for the MLBPA, their power is almost exclusively excercised against the teams, not the players. If Zito wanted to retire, the MLBPA would urge him not to but ultimately, Zito can tell them to go F themselves. Probably the same would go if Zito wanted to cut the Giants a severance deal so he can finally kick rocks.

Before alarms sound, pretty sure this guy is from the MLB board.

Ninebuck doesn't like him, so that makes him cool in my book!

I looked for a "standing ovation, jumping up and down, and clapping" emoticon, but couldn't find one (and yet, you have a "I fuck sheep" emoticon).

This is the best I could find : :clap2: :clap2: :clap2: :clap2:
