Missed that.
Something smells like smoke, must be.

It was when they were talking hitting Craw #2. Tom never pushed him on it, and the interview continues without acknowledging the comment.

Just to state it...

I am NOT in favor of DFAing Huff any time soon. I think he has earned a LOT of slack with the org and deserves every chance to avoid the humiliation of a DFA...

Thx for 2010, Kbai.... that's how I feel about it. DFA the man so he can go back to his family and try to not fuck up his marriage anymore.

You know what pissed me off........?

He stated: "something we learned with players of Craws limited pro experience" is that it's asking too much for them to bat 8th in the order. Are the Giants brain trust so unused to young players, and so far removed from the learning process that they've forgotten the difficulties of breaking into a big league lineup?

Other than Evans, who's supposedly super SABR inclined, I get the feeling that the rest of the FO brain trust is super 'old school'.

When a Bozo on the internet can out old-school the old school guys there's something not right:

It's not being down on Nate so much - more about keeping it simple for Crawford. Would rather not burden Crawford with extra baggage by feeling like he needs to change his approach because he's hitting in front of the pitcher's spot.

This was in response to a post I made in spring training where I wanted Nate hitting behind Crawford.

Well, no one can accuse Bochy of being Huff's co-dependent, now can they?

It could be that direct, blunt acknowledgment by his management and teammates is what the counselor calls for. Just guessing.

Also, let's not read too much into the phrase "crashed and burned". It may not mean he is through. Perhaps just that phase of his life, hopefully.

I get what you mean, and I hope you're right, but at best, it's a poor choice of words. At worst (or best depending on your school of thought), it means that Huff will be DFAed today. Obviously, the truth probably lands somewhere in the middle, as usual, but the phrase "crashed and burned" seems very final to me. "Hitting a low patch" or "dealing with some personal issues and perhaps lacking focus and conditioning" could be construed as hopeful. "Crashed and burned" is about as pessimistic as one can be regarding this situation.

All in all, it could just be Sabey Sabes covering his ass for giving Huff $22 mil when he hadn't had back-to-back good seasons since 2003-04, but that is only for the casual fan to bemoan. We all knew he had to pay him after 2010, almost retroactively, and with the hope that his contract year would lead to his usual resurgence. Either way, I reiterate, that was a very poor choice of words, especially if they aren't going to let him go. If they are, it was just mean. It's fine to be completely honest with Huff behind close doors, but I don't see the benefit to such language with the media.

Last ditch motivational ploy?

Sabean rarely goes outside of his book of Sabeanisms to describe even the most dire of situations.

I know it seems almost cruel given Huff's issues but hoping against hope that it lights a fire under Huff... anger can be a strong motivational tool

Sabean, around Feb 3, talking about why he signed Affeldt in the offseason:

“Willie, at the end of the year, crashed and burned, and couldn’t finish the season,”

in spring training 2012, talking the things that went wrong in 2011:

"Torres crashed and burned. We lost (Freddy) Sanchez as No. 2 hitter, and then Buster (Posey to a season-ending leg injury). And (Aubrey) Huff didn't have the year we expected.

Crash and burn is just another Sabean cliche. I mean, at the end of the day, you can't have an interview with Sabes without him throwing about half a dozen of those out. I'd guess, Sabean was simply talking bluntly about what had already occurred with Huff without meaning to imply Huff was completely done.

That said, Huff is done.

Yup, but since one of those guys is recovering from his second Tommy John Surgery and the other was filler in an off-season deal, it seems that Sabey Sabes agrees. Whether he does anything definitive about it, though, remains to be seen.

Perhaps, but Sabe's first comment came before Willie tore the ucl - the injury in 2011 was a forearm lig/tendon strain. Sabes expected Wilson to be back, used the "crash and burn" metaphor, and did not kick him to the curb.

me without my book of Sabeanisms...

oh well, worth a shot to get anything from Huff this year. Better to make a decision now than play 1b merry go round the rest of the season.

so your saying there's a chance...?

I may one of Huff's last supporters on the board but I feel he's earned it from this fan.

I don't think it is fair to make that accusation anymore. Since his breakdown, Huff has been relegated to low-leverage PH situations. He is #24 or #25 on the roster.

I am not happy to say this, but I do EXPECT him to be DFA'd before the end of the season (probably sooner rather than later).
