Found this interesting.

How to spend the Niners $33.8 million in cap space - Inside the 49ers

I think I'd rather release Parys and spend his salary to retain Brooks than draft a situational pass rushing and let Brooks walk. I could also see Willis reworking his contract to spread his $17 million out, or doing something similar (ie $2 million base this year, $12 million next year) to keep Rogers.

I don't see us being in the market for a bigtime WR if we plan on keeping our Def. together. Though I could see us target a guy like Mathis to replace Brooks, draft a 3rd down specialist, let Rogers walk, grab a mid-tier like Garcon, and then maybe draft a WR/TE/DB along with said OLB/DE. Man my brain has too much time to come up with ideas before it all begins.

We should also save 2-3 million by cutting ties with S. Spencer, correct?

Yeah, although if we let Rogers walk, I bet we'd ask him to take a pay-cut to remain with the team ala Ginn. Though from the way he's talked in the press, he may prefer to be cut and try and catch on with someone else...

Correct. I'm assuming Grant already including cutting Spencer in that total. This also tells me that Spencer had no remaining SB against the cap. So Maiocco's 30Mill of space didn't factor in cutting Spencer.

I'm REALLY hoping the 33.8 Grant is stating doesn't include cutting Spencer. Then that would take us closer to the 40 Mill of space I came up with based on my earlier calculations in the off-season thread.

Rogers isn't under contract so we wouldn't be cutting him. He'll be free to sign with anybody. We'll try to sign him to a reasonable deal and if he wants more he takes a deal from another team.

Grant just got back to me on twitter. His 33.8 didn't include cutting Spencer. Excellent news. That brings are cap space total to $37,100,100. So I'm not off by much.

No, I meant if Rogers isn't signed and allowed to walk away. I would be we would want to keep Spencer for depth, but only at a reduced salary.

There are other CB's i would be interested in. I like Grimes and Porter, but maybe we could find another steal like Culliver this year in the draft. I think if we go after anybody it has to be a WR. I'm sorry, but i am not a fan of the Mathis idea at all. He's getting old and we could bring back Brooks for much cheaper. If Mathis was willing to take a pay cut he would just stay with the Colts.

If they let Rodgers go it means they have faith in either Culliver or Brown to fill the role.

ok but that doesn't solve the problem when we face those high flying offenses that go 3 or 4 wr.

and after the shit with wr's this year, fuck faith. didn't we go through this same shit after our last super bowl? we ended up with a converted safety as our #1 and a bunch of scrubs. favre and aikman tore us to pieces

Just a comment on the salary cap:

I believe we are carrying over about 12 million from last years cap so this inflates our numbers a bit this year. We need to think about next yrs(2013) cap as well so we do not get in touble there.

I dont agree with reworking Willis's contract. I'd rather get it out of the way then hurt us in future years.

makes sense to me, we want both Rogers and Brooks but realistically......

why can't we tag brooks and let Goldon go? Goldson is good but as this writer points out, its harder to find an OLB who can do all three phases? not adamant, just asking?

Well the cost is going to be a lot more. For example, I think Tamba Hali and Woodley got tagged recently and it was around 10 million.

Thats a lot for a player like Brooks who should probably be in the 4 or 5 mill range. He's not close to the same class as those players IMO.

Excellent news indeed. Hopefully Rogers asking price is reasonable. I want the Niners to sign a WR, preferably Vincent Jackson, but I have a feeling he's going to cost too much. Like other posters, I'm warming up to the idea of Garcon. Do you guys think that Colston may ask for $10 mill per season?
