I'm behind in this convo but Riley made like 1.5 last year....his play in no way suggest he is leaning toward being worthy of a 5mil dollar raise...many other options at this position FA. I would not want to put a rookie in this position(2nd rounder)...if its not a 1st rounder that could be asking a lot

True, but its also at a point where if he is performing we can either rework or extend him to make cap room if needed. Or cut him and not take a big hit. Thats simply the way teams do business these days. The concept of a straight money deal or let him walk simply is NOT in the Skins best interest. We simply have to many holes to go creating more over an amount of money that we will likely spen any way and all we get out of it IS the next Ellerbe.

snyder has kept coaches for at least 3 years with the exception of marty and zorn .

and you keep saying that we advocate throwing big money at other peoples "stars" i have not advocated that policy at all . i have maintained for years as to what kind of FA's we need to pursue and stars from other teams i have strongly condemned as to signing .

if we cant replace an avg starting ILB on defense then we have huge problems from scouting , to the FO to coaching

by my count i see 3 players worth a long term investment on defense rak kerrigan and amerson

cofield , jenkins baker are worth some investment as is riley for the right price

the rest need upgrading

exactly what does signing riley to a back loaded contract accomplish ? instant gratification ? a shortcut ?

we need to build this team right . we need to stop taking shortcuts and build a foundation . signing avg players to elite contracts for the sake of giving haslett a fair shot is piss poor business

if haslett is who you think he is then 2 new starting 3/4 ilbs should be worked in easily you are looking at guys who have experience in the 3-4 scheme so all you are doing is learning terminology

i think we have a 3 year rebuild going on here till we get the players we need to compete for the playoffs on a yearly basis . i dont care what you think snyder will do . i believe he gave him a 5 year deal and by year 3 he should be in position to make a run . if we make it sooner then great but we need a complete overall of 30 -35 players and it will take some time to gell

i say you keep him if the price is right . riley still needs to learn how to make calls so that is no different then bringing in an experienced 3/4 ILB as his replacement if needed

and again i dont need better just equal at the price i want

i dont see losing riley as insurmountable as you do the defense has stunk for 4 years . it wont hurt us to bring in someone else if needed with the understanding that keeping riley could be the best move

but i am not ready to jump off a bridge if we lose the guy

Completely agree and in fact, he is not worth anymore 3.5-4M per year imo. With that logic, offer him such and a starter spot or he can go find more money and battle it out for a starting spot some where else. Something tells me he would take our offer.

I just think you guys are under valueing Riley in that he already knows the defensive calls where as two new ILBs means basically they are both learning on the fly. But if we bring in two FA lbs at a cost of $10 million combined, or we could have kept Riley and brought in one FA at a cost of $12 million combined. Short and long term I think the $2 million will more than make up for the fact that we SHOULDNT then have the early to mid season glitches that come with no one currently on the field being quite sure what the coaches want and expect. Riley should bring that and I honestly think when all is said and done, that $2 million would be eaten up any way because the two FAs we bring in will cost a little extra based on the fact that without Riley, we have NO ILBs under contract worthy of starting.

i dont think anyone we bring in would have trouble making calls . we arent making the playoffs in year one of gruden . we should expect some improvement in the team but again losing riley isnt a big deal

in the end i think we get riley at our price or close to it
