I believe a lot of Rak's success is b/c of Kerrigan. His best year was when he was a 4-3 De with Haynesworth. To commit that much money for him you have to be damn well sure he is a top sacker in the NFL and he is not. Look at Jason Worlids for example. Can he be just as effective for half the price. I think so. I just think Rak has always been over hyped. Don't worry guys he will be overpaid b/c the Skins are afraid too lose him. They have no balls. I just don't think he is a 10 million dollar player like Matthews and Suggs. Don't get me wrong I want him back but at the right price.

That's right, London got 5m and he led the league in tackles the year before. In fact, London was still second on the skins this year in tackles, just a couple behind Riley. That's how our defense is designed.

I do agree that Riley's agent will try and use ellerbes contract as l the basis for their demands. But I don't think it will fly with the skins or with the rest of the league. Ellerbe has not lived up to his contract.

Actually the Ellerbe logic is WHY I think they will get the $7 million a year. Ellerbe got $6.9 million as an average salary. Riley outplayed him, Lee got $7 million a year average, Riley managed to play all 16 games. The only real bonus Lee has over him is the picks, which is offset to a degree by the sacks Riley gets. So some where in the $6.5 -$7 million a year AVERAGE is actually quite reasonable for him.

It would help if we can get a D-line that could collapse the pocket or get pressure at all would help greatly

So you really think he is a top 10 ILB, or should be paid like one?

I think he is or shouild be in the top 15 and you pay him what he is worth. You dont lowball him and do what we always do and bring in some one elses "star" and pay them what we should have paid our guy only to complain later.

Archuletta, George and many others are prime examples.

I think Riley is only getting better, and bringing in two new free agents to play ILB will only set this defense back further at this point. For the diffrence of what will hash out to be $1.5 million against the cap the next three years, I say we stick with our own guy and take one less hole off the board instead of creating one which we then have to fill.

You and I both know that if the defense isnt markedly better Haslett will be fired, and that three years gets stretched another year. We are going to pay some one $7 million at ILB, Riley has steadily improved. Starting over in this case is NOT logical.

You keep quoting straight dollar amounts.

Ellerbe counted $2.9 million last year, Lee counted $3 million last year, and Im willing to bet that Riley wont count more than $3 million against the cap even with his new deal. Biggers and Doughty might cost $1.5 each at best, Jackson will likely count $2 million. And the only way I see Rak costing us 11 or even 10 million this year is if we have to tag him.

it would be nice shark if we didnt have to play football past 2014 but hopefully the earth will still be around .

hence you push money back , it will bite us about the time you start needing to resign kerrigans , morris' and rg3"s and williams's

Skinsdad, thats the reality of the salary cap world. Even teams that maintain the clean cap space suck. Good teams have to push some money in order to keep players or sign players. Again as much as you scream Riley is average, who could we get thats better for less? NOt a speculation, but a sure thing?? Answer.. .no one

Or do you think we are going to pay RG3 $20 million a year straight money?? When the time comes.

it is one thing to push money back to resign a morris or kerrigan or even a RG3

it is a hole different ball game to do that for a riley

as for who is better ? who needs better ? we just need the equal and i have given you the list already

I know you gave me a list. But we have been through this before where we thought oh we can just replace this guy ith any one because he wants to much, or because he wasnt quite as good as we would all want. I think Riley is better than you give him credit for and worth a five year $35 million deal as long as there are some performance clauses built in. Straight money, probably not. But then again no one does straight money deals long term any more any way.

Shark, I would love to see Riley on our team next year. I guess our disconnect is what the market will value him at. You seem to believe that someone is going to give him a deal that puts him into to top tier status. I don't. So my feeling is that if other teams don't value him at that level, we don't have to pay him at that level. I think we will be able to sign him at the $5M level and we can save the extra money to fill other holes. The downside is, if Riley is expecting to land a $7M/ year deal, we will have to let him test the waters. If he does and the offers start flowing in, we can always up our offer.

You and I (and the others here) develop these opinions without really knowing what is going on in the negotiations. You get a feel for the situation if you can sit across the table and feel the other party out. Its rarely a take it or leave it thing. You present your offer and reasoning and they present theirs. This is one of the things that Allen does well. As I pointed out earlier, he has let numerous players test the market without panicking and all but one have come back. And that one received an offer we just couldn't match. He obviously has a way of positioning it such that it doesn't burn bridges with the player. Just because Riley tests the market doesn't mean we automatically lose him. Our record is very good in keeping these players over the last few years.

And because I know some one will ask, here is how we give Riley what he wants, and stay out of cap trouble

5 years $35 million face value $7 million garunteed

Year one Base of $1 million, $2 million pro rate $3 million total cap number
Year two Base of $ 1.5 MIllion, $2MIllion Pro rate, $ 500k Performance bonus $4 million cap number
Year Three Base of $3.5 MIllion, $2 MIllion Pro Rate $1 million performance $6.5 Cap Number
Year Four Base of $ 7 Million no prorate Roster Bonus of $3 million Perfformance bonus of $2 million Cap hit $12 million
Year Five Base $9 million Roster bonus of $500k.

Thats $35 million and AVERAGES $7 million a year, but designed for the teeam to have an opt out and have only paid $14.5 million over three years in reality. Or less than $5 million a year if he doesnt pan out and get extended/reworked by year four.

They said 8 mil for Rak. That is just what I said. Riley at 6 is ridiculous. I doubt another team would come close to that. 5 mil is all the money for him.

I agree skinsdad but why would riley sign a one year deal with the skins? he will get a muti year offer from another team but it shouldn't be for much money.
