It was a poor choice, but not worth firing over. Makes me think that there had been something before and this was just the last straw.

Corporate big time companies have to be extremely cautious and vanilla

People get fired all the time for worse social media gaffes at big companies.

The standards are far tighter than what you can get away with amongst friends talking trash at the bars.

If the guy was too stupid to realize the distinction, he probably isnt worth keeping around.

It was a bit much and deserving of the termination. There is nothing wrong with trash talking, but the organizations need to be classier than that. The players need to ratchet it up though. Players these days are way too friendly to each other.

The tweet was harmless, but it was also classless. However, unless there were other issues, firing the guy seems a bit much.
