Some info: The Giants are sending ~$3 million to Seattle to make the trade cash neutral in 2024 (Robbie Ray's $23 million salary vs. the $29 million owed to Haniger and DeSclafani). Also, Ray and Haniger both have $1 million assignment bonuses that balance out.

The Giants are sending $6 million to Seattle, Farhan Zaidi said. Not $3 million as I originally reported. Misinterpreted what "cash neutral" meant. Apologies.

Mariners will owe Mitch $35.5M over next two years if Mitch picks up player option in 2025 ($15.5).

Ray will be owed $73M by SF over next 3 years.

That is the real deal.
Yep. I sort of thought that all along. Garver is the only move we've made so far that has not had salary dump written all over it. The most insulting thing about this offseason is that Dipoto continues to insult our intelligence by playing dumb to any accusations of 'fire sale'. I swear this asshole should go into politics. He was born for it.

Oops! Mitch is owed $30.5M over next two years meaning we save even more than I originally thought.

Total savings $43.5M. Stanton wins again!!!
Does that include the $3 mill I mean $6 mill in cash SFG are sending our way?

"game-changing baserunning and instincts". lmfao.

and yes, we know you're all about singing what you perceive to be 8235790375207352056025-tool players for "versatility".

but seriously, i like that he's under club control for a long time. he's 6'4 which is very tall for an outfielder so i can understand why it took him time to make it to the bigs. i don't hate this acquisition. i hate hollander/dipoto continuing to talk to m's fans like we're all infants.

To be honest I am shocked Jerry could trade Ray. I mean he got nothing for him but still. With how the pitching market is, Jerry could trade Castillo and still sell us on it isn’t a salary dump. With Ray, there isn’t a question it is. But I’m also hopeful they actually spend the savings since next year they only have 3 guys really making any money (I’m assuming France is gone by this deadline)

I'm good with ray getting traded. The next 3yrs will be wasted money as the severity of his injury could keep him out of the 2024 season and by 2025 he could be a shell of his former self. Haniger is fine as long as he doesn't break a bone, sprain a ligament or rip his nut sack open.

Raley trade I do like. Has some pop, speed and can play multiple positions.

Ford in 2023: .228, 16 HRs, 34 RBI, 219 AB's
Raley in 2023: .249, 19 HRs, 49 RBI, 357 AB's

So basically Raley is Ford with outfield potential.

The bad news:

Raley 2nd half of 2023:

.219, 4HRs, 13 RBI, 146 AB's

Sobering thought. Opponent pitchers found the hole in his swing and the pitch he can't hit but can't lay off of either. The Zunino Conundrum

I’m not buying into this team this year. Full me once shame on you. Full me twice shame on me.

I’m going in with low expectations this year. 82 wins, 80 losses.

This is what concerns me. This trade is so one sided in the Mariners favor that the Rays have to know something. His numbers basically say he is an older Kelenic from last year and the Braves had to take on massive salary plus a pitching prospect yet the Mariners had to give up a AAAA player who didn’t have a roster spot if Bliss has a good spring. Something doesn’t add up

This is the fricking problem with the Mariners the past 3 years. If everything go perfect this is can be a great team, but everything has to go perfect like August or the winning streak in 2022 or the win everyone 1 run game in 2021. The team thus far is hopefully Haniger stays healthy, hopefully Canzone becomes a MLB, hopefully Raley’s first half is more indicative than the 2nd half, hopefully Garver stays healthy, hopefully Rojas is Rojas of 2021/22 I can’t remember which one he was good, hopefully Urias turns into what he was suppose to be not the player that the Brewers and Red Sox couldn’t give away quick enough, plus the already hopefully France goes back to healthy 21 and 22 France.

There really isn't must to see here honestly. We had a surplus of middle infield backups so we traded one for an outfield/1B backup. The guy started strong and ended with a thud. If he continues to be the thud, we lost nothing. I heard locked on call him an older Kelenic without the upside in todays podcast and I can see why but Kelenic didn't have much other than potential...the cruelest word in baseball.

I have said it a few times in the past as well and that is the Rays know players better than anyone so buyer beware.

Sure potential is a cruel word but they were essentially the same player. The ups and downs were the same just Jared struggles were more spread out. Basically I’m just saying they are a wash in terms of upgrading last year. Personally I think they are worse at 3B, 2B is the same but Canzone/Haniger could be an upgrade over Teo but Canzone IMO should not be an OF and Haniger’s health is the biggest concern.

So just on paper, I don’t get the big excitement as if they are better. IMO Garver was the only upgrade yesterday and still the only upgrade from game 162.

I know we haven't improved. That whole thing is just BS. A Dipoto snow job like always.

Ganied:
Raley 2.6
Haniger -0.2
Garver 2.1
Urias -0.1
---------
4.4 Gained

Lost:
Ford .6
Suarez 3.2
Kelenic 1.3
Murphy .8
Caballero 2.2
Teo 1.8
----------------
9.9 Lost

Maybe I am forgetting someone, but right now on offense we have lost 5.5 WAR. Ouch!
