I saw the Mitch deal on Facebook and thought it was a joke. I had to go to ESPN to see if true. Poor Mitch. Just when he thought he was free, they pull him back in.
Well, he may have one more good one left in him.
24 HR, 80 RBI, .240 BA? As, long as he has the legs and arm to play RF another year.
I'm not upset about unloading Robbie Ray at all, but that depends on how much of his contract we ate vs how much of Mitch's contract SF ate. My gut feeling is that, factoring in DeSchafali's contract, we came out pretty close to even.

Some info: The Giants are sending ~$3 million to Seattle to make the trade cash neutral in 2024 (Robbie Ray's $23 million salary vs. the $29 million owed to Haniger and DeSclafani). Also, Ray and Haniger both have $1 million assignment bonuses that balance out.

OK, I like that...for 2024. But Ray is also owed money on a guaranteed contract for 2025 and 2026. I'd like to know what the Mariners' obligations might be for those two years.

Interestingly, Robbie Ray had a no-trade clause in 2022-23 that converted to a $1 million trade assignment bonus in 2024. Jerry DiPoto made it four whole days into 2024 before trading him! Such restraint!
I'm ok..with it..though..

Sounds like none from what I read.

I mean this is all fun and stuff because the offseason has been a major bore, but in reality all this is is a salary dump. We rid ourselves of Ray for a lesser contract in Mitch plus win some PR points with the fans. The guy won't/can't stay healthy meaning we will see a lot more of Moore, Haggerty and a 4th OF than we all will like come midseason. We lost nothing in Ray so that is the bonus.

As far as Cabby deal, a swap of role players and Cabby was more energy than production.

Mariners will owe Mitch $35.5M over next two years if Mitch picks up player option in 2025 ($15.5).

Ray will be owed $73M by SF over next 3 years.

That is the real deal.

Welcome back, Mitch. Sorry if things look to be in shambles...

I'm hoping he DOES still have a few good seasons left in him. Then again, not counting the injury Ray suffered last year, I can't help but feel like we traded up anyway.

wait...does this put us up to 55% now?

I've always been fine with trading Ray if we get something good in return. He has 2 pitches and I've never been a fan.

Still, it's hard to imagine Jerry not getting owned in any wheeler-dealing he attempts. He always gets beaten by better GM's.

The trade that will send outfielder Luke Raley to the Seattle Mariners and infielder José Caballero to the Tampa Bay Rays is done, a source tells ESPN. Raley joins the Mariners' outfield mix, and Caballero is in play to start at shortstop for Rays.
@Ken_Rosenthal

That is the real deal.
Oops! Mitch is owed $30.5M over next two years meaning we save even more than I originally thought.

Total savings $43.5M. Stanton wins again!!!
