I get it, but he also helped put the Pens in financial hardship signing a huge deal in 1992 and collected while not playing.

doesn't buying them out at bankruptcy and then successfully negotiating a new building and guaranteeing their continued existence in the Burgh make up for that?

You will have a hard time convincing me Mario has meant more than Rooney. I suppose we can wait abotu 50 more years to see if Mario's contributions are still relevant. Also Rooney was respected throughout the league, the same can not be said of Mario. He has such an uncommon perspective to be an owner and hof player yet he doesnt let the league benefit from it.

I am not saying he was bad for the city, just playing devils advocate.

It's still an Old-Boys Club around the league, and eventually that'll change, and then I think Mario will get more involved. I think he just likes being involved as much as he is now, no more. He has younger kids still, wants to have time and freedom to be involved, not get involved in the higher ups goings on. Also, Rooney bought a team in a football rich area. I mean, this was an easy area to sell football. Western Pa lives, eats, breaths, sleeps football. Mario came in and sold hockey in a football rich market. He had a harder job in that instance. And if you think Mario isn't respected throughout the league, you're nuts. You're right though, only time will tell how they can be compared.

I think that Mario is probably tied with Chief. Chief made the Steelers what they are today, but chances are that someone else would've bought the team and kept them in the area. Chief's affect on the area is hard to dispute though. He was the saving grace (along with the Steelers) in the 70's when the city NEEDED that team more than ever. But, Mario IS Pittsburgh. He was not only a life time Penguin, superstar, Stanley Cup Champion, Conn Smyth winner, Art Ross, Hart Trophy, leader of President's Trophy winning, arguably best PLAYER to ever lace them up...but he then came in and saved the team from bankruptcy and lobbied years after that to keep them in town and get a new arena, as well as being part of orchestrating a third Cup. Maybe it's because time has passed since Chief passed, but I think Mario has had a bigger impact because he's a player AND owner.

Wait, :sly: owned the Steelers?

Lol, I was raised a Steelers fan... But grew to like the Dolphins thanks to Ace Ventura and Dan Marino.

I went to the first game ever played at Heinz Stadium... I think it was a preseason game against the Lions? That was a while ago.

I dont know how football rich Western Pa was prior to 1933. I think a lot of this has to do with the Steelers and their success.

I mean...the Steelers SUCKED for a long time, and football picked up before they were the powerhouse, or even CLOSE, that they are today.

My dad was also a Dolphins fan, but he was because of Larry Csonka.

Nice... to this day, it was the only NFL game I have been to, lol. I always loved playing the game and loved the playoffs. But it is just too stop and go for me.

Hockey has always been my sport.

edit: That stadium was fucking nice from what I remember. I really enjoyed the display of the past. I am really looking forward to visiting the Consol center,.

Never been to an NFL game. Though this year might change that...Steelers play in Indy while I'm at school, and tickets there are cheap and easy to acquire. AND, my uncle who lives in Ft. Wayne has a million lawyer connections.
