Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. I was planning to do nothing this year but when the mother-in-law received her diagnosis that changed everything. I did however escape with minimal work, I will do the bird and oven roasted brussel sprouts. I will have to endure my mother in laws potato salad which is horrible. Her friends at the church told here the potato salad was great but it's not it's horrid, I guess it's one of those little white lies people are allowed to tell. There will be Ox Tails and Collards neither of which I will eat. But to all enjoy your day and be safe. Drink at home if you drink at all.

Back at you. I'll be up early for a 7:30 am 5 mile turkey trot with the kiddos (who are less kids these days), then I'll roast the bird while wifey takes care of the sides -traditional mashed potatoes, butternut squash, stuffing and homemade cranberry sauce. It'll be a smaller bird due to the morning run (wifey doing a 2 mile route so she'll be with us) taking away cooking time and reducing the highly valued leftovers, but it should be a good day.

Enjoy your day!!!

We are doing a bird, oven roasted brussels sprouts, squash, garlic mashed potatoes, corn, cornbread dressing (Not stuffing because it will not be stuffed up the turkeys ass) cranberry jelly, apple-blueberry crumb pie...and something else I am forgetting...dinner rolls...

Some things we will pre prep on Wednesday, others we will do Thursday.
I will grill/smoke the bird. My daughter is doing the rolls, my son is doing the potatoes, my wife is doing the sprouts and dressing...

My niece may come over depending on her work, she is a trauma nurse and is on call at least part of the day.
My neighbor is out of town, so just the 4 of us and some football.

And the dog.

My wife is running the 5k here, but I have to start the bird at gun time so I will not be joining her. Kinda bummed.

Also, 19-20 lb bird.

Last year I stripped the carcas down and had enough for two turkey pot pies in the freezer. Came in great during those WTF are we going to eat/nothing sounds good/I don't want to go to the store but I damn sure don't want pizza kinda nights.

Twice! And the kids LOVE it.

I will be roasting a 14 pound bird this year. It has been a family tradition to roast as huge a bird as I could find but due to the impending hip surgery, I cannot get a 32 pound bird in/out of the oven.
I will roast brussel sprouts with truffle and parmesan. I make a great stuffing but it will not go in the turkey (extra weight)

I learned to cook collards here in the south - now I like them but not for thanksgiving.Oxtails in the collards??????
I rarely like other people's potatoe salad.
I will drink at home. I never drive after even a drop.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you guys and be safe!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Bummer bro. Best of luck. Replacement? I've had both of mine done. You'll be glad you did~
I had back surgery in January and doctors worried about an unknown infection. I have been waiting 6 months for approval.
There are/were no symptoms but they are being very cautious. I have been dragging my sore hip around all year.
My next appointment is Dec 11th. If my lab work is clean I'll get a Christmas present!
Thanks for the encouragement! Happy Thanksgiving.

Just thought of a funny. For when you don't want to be someplace.

"I'd rather clean up a drunk aunt's puke at a new girlfriend's Thanksgiving dinner than to be here!"

Lol!

My wife and daughter both voted to have Cornish Game hens instead of the turkey … i only eat during such events so my voice is always “hey, that sounds like a good idea” … ‘cause I’m a survivor …
but it hit me how unamerican this is … ALL the traditional thanksgiving dishes originated in the new world and, even though I went the other way in this election we just had, I’m still a patriot dammit … but … I ain’t sayin’ nuthin’ … because like accepting my countries politics, I’ll accept my wife’s menu … ‘cause like I said, I’m a survivor

Funny thing is, it's very likely Turkey was not at the first Thanksgiving table. It was more likely fish based on location. Either way I vey much get the survivor comment and hens are a solid choice. I watched the potato salad being made yesterday what a nightmare it will be choking that down

I live about 15 miles from Plymouth. There are will turkeys all over the place. I have no knowledge of the actual menu and I don't know if the relatives of today's turkeys came from somewhere else.

Interesting story from a history of King Phillip, son of Massasoit; the pilgrims were not doing all that well and got drunk and started firing off their guns. The Wampanoags heard the commotion and checked it out. They found the fools and the party started … here’s the interesting part … the ‘Indians’ got a half a dozen deer (that’s how efficient hunters they must have been) … they had ‘foul’ as well but didn’t mention turkey … I’m sure they had fish … squash and pumpkins were very popular with the natives who didn’t season their food much but showed the settlers how to work salt and how to make maple syrup but didn’t use either one much …
