Yep. And since this is the injury time with Pix thread, I thought I'd mention that Wideman also has compartment syndrome to go along with his Hematoma...

Oooh! Ooooh! I had compartment syndrome! I had a bilateral fasciotomy in 2008. Was back on skates and practicing in 8 weeks.

I was back on skates in 8 weeks but it took me quite a bit of time to get back into playing shape. It was a really awful recovery, to be honest.

You had it in the quad? And every case of compartment syndrome I've dealt with has had horrible rehab...that and the chance of recurrence make it a bad injury to deal with.

No, I had it in my lower legs. And I had chronic compartment syndrome, not acute.

The recovery and rehab was very, very difficult for me. I had both legs done at the same time so I basically lost any muscle control I had during that period. The first two weeks of physical therapy after surgery was just learning to point and flex my ankles. It's funny to think that there was a time a few years ago where I physically could not stand on one foot (which was an exercise I had to work up to).

I know that the surgery didn't heal me 100% (and my surgeon never said it would) because sometimes I still experience symptoms. But they are NOTHING like what I used to deal with. Thank God for competent surgeons.

I wonder if you would have been able to diagnose me via SportsHoopla back then! My surgeon initially didn't believe me. Said it's uncommon for women to have chronic compartment syndrome. He's kind of a dick though.

What the hell does gender have to do with it? There are certain things which women are more prone too, and vice versa, but this one certainly isn't one. It's more about what sport you're involved with. This is common in distance runners because they're constantly pounding their feet. Chronic is much more common for me to see, mainly because it takes a LOT to get acute. We actually had one this year, but it was my day off...I was very sad. I hate missing good injuries. But, I did get to see 2 ACL tears, one Hamstring tear, 2 concussions, and a plethora of fun little things...ATs have very odd reactions to injuries. While most people cringe, we rewind and watch a million times trying to diagnose them. It's like a game. :)

EDIT: And back in 2008 I was still in HS and thought I wanted to be a teacher. Hah. Thank God I found athletic training.

.

Yeah, you guys are weird. In roller derby, there aren't a whole lot of skaters with CCS. I had three separate athletic trainers that would just mob me when they saw me and ask me tons of questions and ask to watch me skate. You weirdos.

We have to take joy in our job...or we'd die. It's actually one of the worst jobs in general because of the hours/wage ratio. I don't know how some of my profs do it. They get in before 8am (some days are later than others), teach in the morning, grade, then cover sports/deal with athletes in the evening. Most days they don't leave until 6-7, and on game days it could be as late as 11pm. The salary (of them I don't know) on average is about 30k +/- 5k. I'm not in it for the money, heh.

But yes...we're weirdos :)

In fact, I wish we had a class on just watching injury videos and trying to guess what it is. We had an easy class last year that was basically done in 30 minutes every day...so we watched YouTubes of injuries. WOOT!

Tape Job!!!!

By the way...

I played every snap on defense, had the ball thrown at me 4 times, (none in the second half, they smartened up), had a pic, 2 knock downs and one catch for like 3 yards. I am badass enough for the pink tape, WHAT!!!!

In all honesty, it hurt a bit, but that is what the darvocet was for (only one that I have had to take yet).

Not too shabby, haha. We're taught as trainers to use the means we have and be "creative" about it. As long as those fingers aren't moving from each other you should be fine. It's gonna hurt any time there's contact, so be sure to ice it afterwards. Personally I probably wouldn't play with that injury, but if your doc said it was okay, then go by his word...he saw the xray, not me.
