I have mallet fracture with very little displacement. The doctor said that I could keep playing football as long as I wore the splint and kept it protected. I forgot to ask him how to keep it protected. I will PM you my IPMC insurance information if you tell me what the hell he expects me to do to this thing!?!?!

I have the metal brace that was first on it (one of those pliable things. I figured that if I put a glove over the splint to keep it in place, added the metal piese to protect the tip and buddy taped the mother fucker to my ring finger, that ought to work.

Thoughts?

Dang, I was just off on my prediction. Just one joint up! Mallet finger with an avulsion fracture I presume? Just be careful that you don't move it, because the second you start messing with it you could re-injure the ligament. And...did you mean UPMC insurance?
On the protection end of it, the most important part is to keep the finger in full extension, which is what the pliable brace does for you, and buddy taping is a great idea. As far as extra protection goes, the metal piece sounds like it should be fine, just be cautious with it, because if the bone avulses off any more, or further fx occurs it can lead to surgery.

Just realized it was ritari's injury that I guessed on, not yours. Very similar injuries though, just one is the proximal IP joint and the other is the distal IP.

Yep. And since this is the injury time with Pix thread, I thought I'd mention that Wideman also has compartment syndrome to go along with his Hematoma...

Bad news bears there. He probably won't be back. Typically that's a long recovery time (well, long meaning most of playoffs). It really depends though. I haven't dealt with most injuries in a hockey setting so I don't know how that really differs from say, soccer or running sports. I assume that skating isn't quite as strenuous on the legs as running would be, but that could be wrong. I thought his injury was upper leg/quads though? I'm pretty sure you can't get compartment syndrome in the quads. Well, I guess it could just be really rare. I think I described it last time, but it generally ends with surgery to release the fascia that holds the muscles in their compartment to release the pressure. But that's a few weeks to get back from surgery in general, rehabbing the muscle back to full strength, working out the scar tissue, getting full ROM, and hoping it doesn't return (which it can).

yeah Wideman got released from the hospital today I believe, so that makes his return date at best a few rounds from now and at worst, training camp

You can get it in the quad and it ends up being much longer for recovery. It happened to a receiver for the Hokies last season and his leg was open for 22 days. More rare, but seriously nasty. Recovery time measured in months, not weeks. Unfortunate.

It's especially nasty because it occurred acutely. You have to get those open QUICK or you risk losing your leg. I haven't heard of it in the quad, only lower leg and forearm (although forearm is usually secondary to a fracture/dislocation). I wish him the best, but his season is certainly through if he was only now released from the hospital...I'm sure it was similar to the Hokie player. Gotta flay those open, similar to when someone has brain swelling...you remove the skull to let the pressure decrease, and it's difficult because you're just welcoming infection then. Hopefully he'll be ready for camp and nothing returns. My friend had it this season during XC in the lower leg, ran through it some (it was chronic and not as big a danger), got surgery in December, and hasn't been able to get back to shape yet and she even gave up her Track season because of it. Not an easy one.

I expect a plethora of Boxer's fractures. You can guess what the mechanism of injury is for those. It's funny, we've had a few athletes get these in the past few seasons and they ALWAYS lie about it, like it happened in practice or something, when in reality, they got hammered and punched their refrigerator.

I am thinking Jeff might need your help for a bruised ego the first time he actually steps into the ring for a real match.
