Good for him.

One of the highest risk factors for Avascular Necrosis (AVN) is anabolic steroid use. It's not always the case but in a young athlete, it is highly suspicious.

Kind of makes you think back on his road rage, fighting in practice and general lunacy in Ottawa in a different light.

Hopefully his hip holds up and he has grown. He's a good goalie and I'd like to see him do well.

Yeah, it makes you wonder Kenny. It's too bad though because it looked like he had such a bright future ahead of him.

I hope to see him come back and do well too.

Maybe Detroit can sign him... :D

Ducks or Red Wings for sure. Maybe the Avs I heard a rumor of. Also heard Philly is "mildly" interested, dunno why.

Avascular Necrosis isn't something you can come back from easily...it tends to crop back up sooner or later. Good luck to him, but in my learning about it we were basically told it's a career ender.

In April, he underwent a very specialized and complex procedure that involved removing 13-centimetres from his right fibula and then grafting it to the femur to re-introduce a proper blood supply to the area.

Wow...seriously I've never heard of that procedure. Wonder if that's a more recently developed one. Makes sense though. The fibula is the least weight bearing of the lower extremity bones, but I don't know how they could re-establish blood supply to the area, because it's just a degenerative thing. Who knows, very interesting though.

It is Pix.

Hip replacements that are often the treatment for AVN would have, as you alluded to in your earlier post, pretty much ended his career. He chose this riskier, but higher reward, option instead.

For what it's worth Brett Favre had AVN and, unfortunately, his career was anything but too short.

It really doesn't matter who signs him. With Dipietro injured, the Islanders will pick Emery up on waivers.

they just picked up Joel Martin, former Vancouver Giant goalie ... I remember him one time getting lost on the way to Pacific Coliseum for a home game

/this after he'd been on the team for 2 years :L

Martin was already playing in Bridgeport. They just signed him to a two way contract.
