Exactly. The team has to be smart about how it spends its money in the salary cap era. Didn't we learn anything with the Haynesworth signing? You cannot put all of your eggs in one (or two) basket(s). What happens if the sexy FA gets hurt or underperforms?
You also have to ensure that you don't spend all of your future money since some big $$ contracts are on the horizon especially RG3 (and perhaps others like Reed & Morris). The goal should be to build a solid organization that can compete every year - not simply a team that has a chance next season.
I think that gke has the right idea - perhaps the names will be different, but the philosophy is correct for the most part IMO.

time to bump this up here is what we are looking at
I respectfully disagree. We need a couple of playmakers at key positions. Safety and ILB for example. We do need to be prudent and do have multiple holes, but if we fill them all with mediocre players, then we will be in the same boat just rearranging the deck chairs. We have mediocre players now. Having an additional play maker or 2 changes everything. They cause turnovers. They break up passes. The can cover one on one. That takes the pressure off of their mediocre teammates and many times raises their level of play.
One thing we can do today is find a freaking punter. Rocca is done. There has to be someone out there that can directionally kick a football 40 yards. Rocca can't. He has burned us at least once in every game.
We can't take the Cerrato approach and throw all of our money at 3 players. I agree that ILB and Safety would help for sure. You failed to address CB (which might be a bigger need than Safety) and the glaring hole in the OLine. Vinny always went for the homerun and never addressed the "non-playmaker" positions. We need a Center and RG if RG3 is going to stay in the league.
Again, Cerrato never viewed the OLine as important and only went after playmakers. We have spent years trying to clean up his mess. You are also wrong that we have lots of mediocre players. We actually have several sub-standard players. I would take mediocre players versus the sub-standard players we currently have that are killing this team. We can't have Pro-Bowl players at every position. Average players will have to do for several spots on this team. Again, signing some average players would certainly be an upgrade. Center and Right Guard (Monty and Chester) for example are below average players and certainly need to be upgraded.
Lets learn from the past and address as many positions as we can and not waste our cap on 3 players. The Redskins typically always try to finish the basement while there is a hole in the roof. We do need a new punter for sure.
Cerrato went after the marquee names after their prime. That's not what I'm talking about. We can get solid, veteran players that are below 30. Ideally you look for those coming off of their rookie contracts. They have proven themselves as starters and consistent players. They don't have to be PB players, but they have to have a proven track record and are still young. I'm not talking about every hole, just a few key ones. A Jairus Bryd at Safety. He has 3-6 INTs every year and is a playmaker. A Jonathan Vilma at ILB. Solid, dependable, makes plays. Kinda like a young Fletcher when we picked him up.
What we don't want is someone else's trash. A Madieu Williams, a Tanard Jackson. A Josh Morgan (that's probably a bit harsh, but he didn't produce to his contract). If you just try and fill all holes with a little money, thats what you end up with.
Linemen linemen linemen, if we don't address the biggest problem on this team nothing else matters.

Vilma will be 32 next season - do you still want him?
