If Bell had fumbled before the ball crossed the plane Ravens fans would be bitching about the call. The rule is fine. It's cut and dried. Trying to split hairs by adding timing, situation and the refs judgement would unnecessarily complicate it.

Or if someone got him with a helmet to head hit. I hate the rule but if you do it how it is is the only way to implement it.

I honestly didn't know they'd made it a rule until last night. But just reading this thread and seeing all of the "ifs & buts" and ref's judgement people think should be baked into it lead me to think they got it right. How often does this even happen and how often does it have an impact on the game ? Ball carrier's helmet comes off = dead ball. Makes sense to me. I don't like some of the player safety rules either. I especially hate the "hit on a defenseless receiver" rule and the fact that you can't catch a guy sleeping and block him from his blind side now. But this one doesn't bother me. :noidea:

Poor phrasing. They do, in some cases, but in the majority, the view is that the risk is assumed by the smoker, and the tobacco companies are not responsible. The exceptions generally involve more than "I smoked, so I got cancer".

Correct call

Helmets are not optional...imo allowing a play to continue exposes the player to serious injury and in an extreme case even death...the NFL isn't going to have that liability on their hands.

Let's hear Steelers fans defend that move. I think most of them will have no problem with it. but if this was a Patriots player or coach who did it... oh boy watch out!

I'm a Steeler fan, I found it pathetic and unbecoming of someone who's supposed to be a leader of men. Tomlin is a chump, I cannot WAIT until we have a real head coach again

It is called deterrence.

A hard and fast rule like this motivates players to strap it up tight. Even if Bell usually has it strapped up And this was incidental, it got into the news and more players will pay attention.

Exactly, strap that thing on like you mean it.

Make sure the flippin helmet is strapped on properly before the play starts. How hard is that? It's not like a helmet is flying off every play. They have hands to the face and facemask rules in case defenders are trying to unsnap it.

How do you feel about a coach not only being in the white along the sideline (which he shouldn't be), but also sticking his foot out into the field during a play?

Whatever price Tomlin has to pay for that...he earned it...bad move.

What is the exact point in that new rule in the play similar to what happened tonight? All it literally does is punish a team for having a players helmet unluckily come off from a hit.

If you have to ask what the point is, it's obvious your mind is closed on the matter. I mean fuck player safety let's just allow players to bring guns on the field

You guys remember when Jason Witten got his helmet knocked off and still continued running? The rule was created for scenarios like that.

As a football player your instincts are to keep going if the whistle isn't blown. And most players like Witten will continue to fight for the extra yard even if they lost their helmet. The rule protects the player from themselves.

The Witten run was incredible but what if at the end of the play he gets tackled and face plants into the ground causing a serious head injury.

And those plays should be allowed to go on. He wasn't tackled and as such isn't and shouldn't be down.

and if the NFL was a "helmet optional" league you'd have a point. We get it. You don't like any of the new player safety rules. You can stop repeating yourself any time now.

Fuck 'em.

Just make it very clear that football brings an inherent risk of head trauma and that playing is at your risk. Tobacco companies don't get sued for lung cancer.

You're stupid.

So what if your running back breaks a 50 yard run, does a defender need to just run over to an offensive lineman and rip his helmet off or is it the ball carriers helmet that has to stay on?

No he brings up a point that no one is willing to discuss...

There is a surgeon's warning that smoking causes cancer and tobacco companies are not held liable for people getting sick. Why can't the NFL say that studies have shown that repeated hits to the head can lead to CTE and you play at your own risk? I know they are not the same thing as one is a habit and the other is an activity/profession. But why can it not be like that? I wish someone would take a moment to think why this is instead of TAKING THE EASY WAY OUT and saying "you're stupid".

1. I'm guessing the NFLPA wouldn't go along with that.
2. They don't want to give the impression that they don't care. It would hurt their ability to make money.
3. It would scare parents even more than the current situation. The sport of football (at all levels) would be harmed very badly.

It doesn't help prevent injuries. It's not like anyone is going to immediately stop or can they stop once their helmet comes off in a bang bang play. All it does is punish a team for an unlucky break.

Agreed.....the only way this should come in effect is when a player tries to make another football move.
LeVeon was clearly gonna make the endzone with or without a helmet. And he never even tried to make a move.
I can see if a players helmet comes off and he is still trying for more yardage............
Why punish Leveon for that?
