I'm interested in seeing how they end up doing with this model and if Disney and even possibly Paramount will try to follow suit. There's still some movies though that are just better with the theater experience. I'll still probably go see Godzilla vs Kong in theaters.

Box-office revenue, which movie theaters split with the studios, fell off a cliff at the onset of the pandemic. January’s top movie, “Bad Boys for Life,” pulled in more than $135 million. The top movie in April, an independent comedy called “Phoenix, Oregon,” grossed $16,846 nationwide. Total U.S. box-office revenue for 2020 is on pace to come up $9 billion short of where it was in 2019. Even though theaters reopened in many places over the summer, customers have been hesitant to risk going to the cinema, and polls indicate that they won’t feel comfortable doing so anytime soon.

In response, studios have delayed many of their biggest films and increasingly relied on digital distribution for properties that are released. While those changes may help studios mitigate their losses, they’ve only made things more difficult for the theater industry. “Theaters may not survive the impact of the pandemic,” the National Association of Theatre Owners wrote in a letter to Congress in September.

Incorrect.

HBOMax is available on most streaming platforms. Fire was added about 3 weeks ago. I believe Roku is the only “current” platform that still does not carry it.

Deadline is reporting that Legendary Pictures, which financed 75% of Dune and Godzilla vs. Kong, is going to sue Warner Bros. to prevent Warner Bros. from releasing those two films direct to HBO Max.

Sounds like a good lawsuit. This type of distribution is probably not covered in the contract between the production company and the movie distributor, or the digital release was to happen after the release to theaters.

NBC News: "HBO Max and Discovery+ will combine into a single streaming service":

NBC News said:
The media corporation did not reveal a name for the combined platform, which it said will launch in the U.S. in the summer of 2023, with other regions to follow in 2024.

NBC News said:
The company is considering a free, ad-supported version of the combined streaming platform, Zaslav confirmed on the earnings call. HBO Max's ad-supported tier currently costs $10 a month.

Background: Earlier in 2022, AT&T sold Warner Bros (WB) to Discovery, forming Warner Bros Discovery (WBD). WB and Discovery each already had a streaming service, HBO Max and Discovery+, respectively.

WB's financial situation is not good, with something like $53 billion in debt, so new CEO David Zaslav is committed to cost-cutting, including recently scrapping Batgirl and other less high-profile movies and shows from HBO Max.
