That said, Elo might still very well be right, because Price's .932 is still only 14ish % better than .922 would be. Furthermore, I haven't watched enough hockey to say whether or not any particular player is a more deserving MVP candidate this year.

I know I'll get hammered for this opinion but if Price was Finnish or Polish he wouldn't get it but since he's "homegrown" he's a Lock

Hey 'loco, generally I agree with you, but I don't have an issue with a goalie winning the Hart when they really stood out (he did) and the forwards in general were underwhelming (they were).

Don't get me wrong, OV and Tavares were the best forwards this year (I love Benn but have trouble giving the Hart to a non-playoff team member) but less than 90 points is not impressive. If this is the new norm (considering Crosby was the only guy last year, and maybe we won't see anyone over 90 next year) then I'll have to reconsider, but this just seems like the type of year for a goalie to win it if they stood out, and Price did.

Price deserves this. Without him the Habs would have crumbled this year.

Tavares is second for me in this trio of players.

The arguments surrounding value could go on forever though. Erik Karlsson played something like 6-8 full games more than any other Ottawa Senator, and considering how integral he was to a Ottawa's insane rally to the playoffs an argument could be made that he was more valuable to his team than anyone else in the league.

I wouldn't make that argument though because I don't think Karlsson, or anyone else, was as consistently dominant for their team as Carey Price.

Here are Carey Price's stats compared to Cory Schneider who was on a significantly worse team. While Price is better it's not above and beyond better. This idea that the Montreal Canadiens are a bad team with a great goalie is silly in my opinion. Put Cory Schneider on the Canadiens and they still end up with a high seed in the playoffs.

Schneider is no slouch as a goalie, though, probably in the top tier of netminders right now. He just plays on a pretty weak team, so he doesn't get the same attention.

Woah, I meant non-pitcher for MVP. I do believe only a pitcher should win the Cy Young.
I don't like the pitcher winning MVP comparison. The reason being is there are awards that are pretty much position (F, D, G) oriented. Vezina for G, Norris for D, the Art Ross and Maurice Richard could be won by a D-man I suppose but what are the odds of that happening as only Orr has won the Ross. I think Hockey is the only sport of the 4 major where every position has a viable shot for the Hart.

Okay, then we can simply have a "best save percentage" "best GAA" award? Those aren't *technically* forward awards, they're skater awards. It's the same reasoning I question pitchers getting MVPs in baseball when the Cy Young exists (well, in that one it's also the every 5 day argument), just feels weird.

I mean, you are right about the Rocket and Art Ross, but

Wikipedia said:
The Frank J. Selke Trophy is awarded annually to the National Hockey League forward who demonstrates the most skill in the defensive component of the game.

That one kind of is by definition of a forward award. And I guess a goalie could win either the Rocket Richard or the Art Ross. It'd be a hell of a season to watch, though. Probably get kind of odd seeing teams fall for this, though:

^ Plus, the last non forward to even sniff the scoring awards was Robert Gordon Orr.

So, yes *technically* any skater can. But c'mon.

Paul Coffey finished third in 85-86 with 138 points. Granted, Gretzky had 215 to win the Ross. But still. Third place.
