I think they gave up a lot i think sanchez is a #3 guy now
The deal was almost as much for Infante as it was for Sanchez, 2B has been terrible for them this year

Depends on the price

maybe it is and maybe it isn't. he is young and is considered a baseball talent that is under contract for the next 2-4 years. and the Rangers might consider not signing either Hamilton or Cruz which weakens the team's outfield and offense next season. using an outfield next season built around Gentry, Martin & Upton gives us a very good defensive outfield and they may not replace the offense of Hamilton & Cruz completely but it would still be a potent team.
i'm not insisting on anything. i made a suggestion of some options that could help the team now and in the future.
Anibal Sanchez is no #3. Look at his numbers. A guy with a 3.8 ERA over the last few years and a K per inning ratio is not a #3. Maybe on the Phillies.
Well he isn't ahead of Verlander, and will be interesting to see if he can take the #2 spot from Scherzer now that Sanchez isn't getting at least 3 free outs per game.
If Scherzer is their #2, which he may be, then it won't take much from Sanchez to take that designation from him
Though Scherzer numbers seem to suffer the most from Detroit's terrible defense
I'd take Scherzer on this team in a heartbeat. He is a power arm that can get outs. He's no more up and down than anyone we have right now. I'd say he is Derek Holland with more strikeout ability. I know K's aren't the end-all, but Max is a legit #2.
I'd just have to disagree, he's far more up and down than Holland, but yes has more K ability, he's a 3 at best most likely a 4 in my eyes... Personally I wouldn't trust him, but his ability to dominate makes him viable for a playoff rotation
His secondary numbers (FIP, xFIP and SIERA) indicate that many of his struggles can be attributed to the putrid defense behind him, but he was an up and down pitcher when he had defenses behind him, but I certainly don't think he's anywhere close to a #2
Then we agree to disagree. To date his career numbers are better than Hollands, though.
He had a better start to his career, thats all, I'm talking about this year which is all that matters in a discussion like this
Even in Holland's up and down season this year, he's been more consistent than Scherzer-phrenic, who will look great one start and then terrible the next 2
But hey he strikes out a lot of people, he must be good
Don't get pissy.
2012 stats
Holland: 95IP, 7-5, .6 WAR, 1.25 WHIP, 4.74 ERA, 30BB, 74K, 2.47 k/BB
Scherzer: 116.1IP, 10-5, 1.0 WAR, 1.38 WHIP, 4.49 ERA, 43BB, 142K, 3.30 k/BB
He does more than strikeout people.
He must have gone on a heck of a run in the last couple weeks, last I saw his ERA was in the low 5's
And Holland has had injury issues, that accounts for a good part of his problems right before and after the DL,
We'll check back in at the end of the year, and I wasn't pissy
But to clarify someone with a 1.0 WAR, a 4.49 ERA and a 1.38 qualifies as a #2? man you have low standards
The same way that Lewis qualifies as a #1 on Texas. Anibal will have to beat out Scherzer's numbers in the AL to take the #2 spot. That is all I'm saying.
No you said he IS a number 2, not is THE number 2 in Detroit
But all I said is Scherzer is not a number 2, and that it wouldn't take much for Sanchez for to be the #2 in Detroit
Also forgot to mention Scherzer pitches in a pitcher's park, he's even HELPED by his park
Well here we go, did the Texas board get merged with the Politics board and now we are going to play semantics from now on? Hell, you said Holland was more consistent than Scherzer-phrenic. Guess not, especially when you consider that Scherzer has never had a season (more of them total than Holland even) where his ERA is more than 1ER away from his career ERA. Holland has.
What do you consider Holland? Is he not Texas' #2? All I said to start all this is that Max is a legit #2 and Sanchez will have to show that he can be better than Max when he isn't getting at least 3 free outs per outing.
You brought Holland into the debate not me
So you admit you think 1.0 WAR, 4.49 ERA, and a 1.38 WHIP are legit #2 numbers? So be it, I'm sure most people would disagree
I say no, and all said to that was, Sanchez won't have a hard time beating out Scherzer as Detroit's #2 (which he might be)
Don't try to pull semantics into this, there's a pretty big difference between saying a legit #2 (which is difficult) and Detroit's 2nd best starter (which apparently is not that difficult)
