I didn't realize he spent his final year in the league with the 49ers until I looked his stats up.

By then the jets had cooled, as we found out on the pro track circuit when he got trounced by Cliff Branch in a football 40,

Ah....

Forrest Gregg
On Jan. 17, 1977, in my lead to a story about Bart Starr and Forrest Gregg being voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, I wrote that Vince Lombardi had called Gregg the best player he ever coached. I was 29 years old and had covered the Packers as a beat reporter for the Green Bay Press-Gazette for three seasons.Nov 19, 2020

So some debate there.

Hornung was a good multi talented player but no HOFer

That is actually the beginning of an article where the author admits that he incorrectly reported that Lombardi called Gregg the greatest player he ever coached, when in fact Hornung was the only player that Lombardi is known to have called the greatest player he coached.

Yeah I know, but there is more.

JASON WILDE For the State Journal
GREEN BAY — There is some debate among historians whether Vince Lombardi considered Forrest Gregg or Paul Hornung to be the best player he ever coached.

But there is no doubt about this: Gregg, the Green Bay Packers legendary offensive lineman and Pro Football Hall of Famer who died Friday at age 85, was one of the greatest and most iconic players in the team’s storied history.

Even though his four-year tenure as the team’s head coach in the 1980s was a disappointment — and marked by troublesome on- and off-the-field behavior by his players — Gregg’s place in Packers history is unquestioned: No offensive lineman ever did it better in green and gold.

Just guessing here but can see a rugged o lineman getting praise over a pretty boy running back.

Simply too many there now, it should be just the elite of the elite.

Paul Hornung?

Funny story about Hornung. He won the 1956 Heisman for leading the Fighting Irish to a 2-8 record. Pretty sure that makes him the only winner of that award that played for a team that had a losing record.

Yep, the only time in history the Heisman was given to a cat on a losing team, the power of NOTRE DAME back then.

I didn't start following sports until 1987, but I love history. I've only watched some highlights of Hornung and read about him. Vince Lombardi did call him the greatest player he's ever coached, so that's gotta count for something.

His prime was just a bit before my time. He was one of the last of the "does everything" guys who actually did everything at the NFL level. Frank Gifford had a similar career with the Giants and he's in.. though he was a much bigger threat as a receiver. Both had the "played for great teams" advantage.

Beattie Feathers (Bears) was the first 1000 yard rusher in NFL history, talking 1934. What was freaky was his average,,,,,8.4!!!!!!!!

The dude played another six seasons never gaining over 350 yards in a season.

Yep, weird!

Here are Hornung's stats from the '56 season. They're pathetic.

passing: 59-111 (53.2%) / 917 yards / 3 TD's / 13 int's
rushing: 94 rushes for 420 yards (4.5 average) / 6 TD's
recieving: 3 catches for 26 yards & no TD's

That's good for 1,363 & 9 total TD's in 10 games. He had more turnovers than TD's that year. Those aren't Heisman numbers.

Good job, props!

So we have to ask the question......who should have won the Heisman that season?

Jim Brown?

OJ really? Here's what he did with the 49ers.

23 games (18 starts). 281 carries / 1,053 yards / 4 TD's / 3.7 average.

And Moss? Here's what he did with the 49ers.

16 games (2 starts). 28 cathes / 434 yards / 3 TD's. S.F. can't claim him.

Bob Hayes? His numbers as a 49ers.

4 games (3 starts). 6 cathes / 119 yards / no TD's.

So does that mean the Arizona Cardinals can claim Emmitt Smith?

His numbers in Dallas. 201 games (199 starts). 4,052 rushes / 17,162 yards / 153 TD's / 4.2 average
What he did in Arizona. 25 games (20 starts). 357 rushes / 1,193 yards / 11 TD's / 3.3 average
YEP....sorta shoots that number of 12 to high hell.

Notre Dame, of course, because you have Joe Montana, Tim Brown, Jerome Bettis, Ricky Watters, and Paul Hornung.
