He played at a high level for a long time, but on a per game basis he really isn't anything special compared to the other great TE of his era. Gronk and Mackey both crushed the other TE of their respective eras and were both great run and pass blockers to boot. Gonzalez was a terrible blocker most of his career and only really improved that aspect of his game at the tail end of his career.

Had this conversation with my boys a few hours ago and it mirrors what Willie McGinest has been saying since before the SB. Gronk doesn't need OTAs or training camp at this point in his career and while he may in fact be done for good, no one will be surprised if he gets antsy by week 6 or 8 and decides he has a bit more left in the tank.
