He threw a complete game against the Chicago Cubs using just 76 pitches. Yes, just 76. Of those, only 13 were balls. He had six strikeouts. Not only did Maddux not walk anyone, he didn’t get into a single three-ball count all day. He only got two balls against a hitter twice — once in the second inning against Sammy Sosa and in the seventh against Mark Grace.

Eddie Perez, who was Maddux’s personal catcher at the time and now the Braves’ first-base coach, remembers the game well.

“We didn’t pay attention to pitch count back then,” Perez said. “Now, it’s right there in every ballpark. We didn’t have that, especially not in Chicago.

“The eighth or ninth inning, that’s when I was like ‘Oh my God, we’re almost done.’” Perez said. “We walked into the clubhouse and someone said ‘Wow, he only threw 76 pitches.’ Really? I know it was somewhere in that area, but not that low.

“After the game we could hear Leo Mazzone, he was the pitching coach at the time, yelling ‘That wasn’t 76, that was 74.’ ”

I forgot who, but some scrub threw like an 86 pitch complete game against the Mariners a few years ago, so pretty close

These are the ones I've found since Maddux's gem in 1997.

Aaron Cook threw 74 for the Rockies in 2007.
Carlos Silvia threw 74 for the Twins in 2005.
Andy Ashby threw 75 for the Padres in 1998.
Jordan Zimmerman threw a 76 pitch 8 inning complete game in 2014.

I say no. Maddux's 1995 season when he went 19-2, 1.63 and Pedro's 1999 23-4, 2.07 were the most dominating single seasons I've seen from a starting pitcher. I'm not old enough to have seen Bob Gibson on Koufax, but I'll never forget how good Maddux was in 95 and I was a teenager and have seen lots of great pitchers since then.

ok, fine... Throw out everything prior to 2014, with the exception of Maddux's, will it happen again? LOL

This is still the most amazing pitching performance that I can remember.

What Pirates starter Harvey Haddix did against the Milwaukee Braves on May 26, 1959, was as good a performance as any in the history of baseball -- an amazing 12 perfect innings, still the all-time record, while facing one of the most dangerous lineups in baseball. But, it's fallen through the historical cracks for a remarkable reason: Somehow, Pittsburgh lost the game.

Kerry Wood's 20 K game is the most impressive of my lifetime IMO. And that was against a very good lineup. Kluber's 18 K game was pretty insane too (and that was in 8 innings).

I'd say Pedro's 2000 was even more impressive than 1999.

A 0.74 WHIP is bonkers in any era, let alone the silly ball era.
