Sacks were not recognized as a stat until 1982, so it has always been hard to judge guys like Deacon Jones versus modern players because the numbers don't exist. This number is one people have basically made up after looking at the tapes and gauging how many sacks the player would have had under modern rules. For years, people have argued Jones probably would be the all-time sacks leader if they had counted sacks in his day, and they may be right. We will never know though.
Yeah and I'm not saying the stats were wrong, I'm just always looking for more sites to look at more in-depth leaderboards if they exist. Considering the guy posted QB hurries and pass deflections, I'd love to learn where he got the numbers, what method they used to compile them, and the leaderboards of guys from the 60s and 70s.

In 1967, Deacon had 26 sacks, 100 solo tackles, 139 total tackles, 74 qb hurries, 9 passes deflected and 3 forced fumbles

They didnt record stats. Keep making up shit. It is unofficial and most likely not accurate. I believe that he was dominant though.

1. That was a 14 game season
2. Where do you get those numbers?

1. You are right, I was mistaken it was 14.
2. George Allen when he was coach kept record of all defensive stats in his yearly playbooks. Not to mention Clive Grafton was an excellent play by play transcriber, he recorded every Rams home game.they are verified by Rams official team records and playbooks

They didn't record tackles fyi....so saying he got 100 solo tackles is not accurate. Now Reggie White did have 100 or tackles in 4 seasons. Reggie, Deacon and Bruce are all elite DE's but saying Deacon is just better by far is absurd. Reggie White might be the most dominant defensive player of all-time and he did it against better competition.

You are completely wrong on that.

Yeah, and you are badly mistaken if you think he couldn't play without the headslap. What is funny to me, is that anybody could do it until it was outlawed. But nobody came close to Deacon when it comes to his level of production. That is because he was a once in generation player.
He did make my top 10.

Bullshit, he did nothing against the rules.
and who said it was against the rules?

you wanna talk bullshit? Bullshit are the stats you spin here for Deacon.
100 tackles? Shit buddy, they ran away from Jones more often than not.

That is best we have from then, I'm sure they are made up by George Allen
I didn't claim they were made up. Don't get your panties in a bunch.

I'm disappointed because as I said earlier, I was hoping there was a site that had those stats compiled from the 60s and 70s because that would be very interesting to take a look at. It doesn't mean much if we only have one team's stats from a coach at the time. We can't compare it to anyone in that era to see how dominant that player actually was. That's all I'm saying. So if that is the best we have, then I stand by what I said "I'm disappointed"

Is it fair to say that Deacon Jones spent most of his career surrounded by talent? That Rams Dline as a whole was no joke.

He had Merlin, one of the best DT's ever, with him basically his entire career and Youngblood, one of the best DE's ever, with him at the end of his career. It definitely helps.

They had a Fearsome Foursome for a long time. Most Batman pass rushers need a Robin to get sacks. The most obvious recent example was Aldon Smith vanishing without Justin Smith but you also had the STL Rams go through a pretty epic sack drought before Aaron Donald came on to the scene.

Derrick Thomas had Neil Smith for most of the ride. Bruce Smith and Reggie White both had some really good players play with them.

@Clayton
You should try a mock draft with us, if you haven't already. We are doing an NFL draft next.

I've done about 5 or 6 drafts.

At some point, you need to see the players actually play each other on a team, though. Nostalgia blinds us all and its hard to find value in drafting and then turn around and convince the same people who passed on that value to vote for your team.

Actually, Youngblood backed Jones up in 1971. He became a starter after Jones was traded to the Chargers in 1972.

I agree, I wish there was a better source or more of a source with actual stats besides teams keeping their own stats. Which some didn't even though. All I was originally saying was that any player could use a headslap, yet since was the most dominant of the players he gets criticized and quickly dismissed because he used a once legal maneuver

Deacon Jones is a top 5 all time DE....I think most people would probably agree...but I ain't buying any home cookin' stats because teams were notorious with embellishing numbers. It was claimed that Norm Willey had 17 sacks in one game back in the 50's.

I agree 100%
No way in hell a DE had 100 tackles....just ain't buying that one
and
the head slap was legal but no player did it with the force Jones did. All the old o-tackles talked about their head ringing by mid second QTR when playing Deacon.
