well it is a canadian problem a major one. we are not comparing it to the states justice system but a lot of the sentencing we see for child molestation is pretty harsh in the US so its a good comparison. we know that all systems are fucked some more than others. ours is just so fucking lenient in so many ways

unless of course you rip off the government somehow.... (unless your already a politician)

I guess that was the point I was trying to make.

I honestly can't think of too many high profile child molestation cases in the US besides Sandusky, so I won't speak to the punishments for that specific offense, but there are plenty of examples of people getting off way too easy for shit like a DUI crash that kills somebody compared to a guy with a bag of weed getting more time.

I would compare the Sandusky and James situations as very very similar. both high profile sports members. both respected at the time in their communities by both parents, schools and leagues and both took advantage of that said respect to take advantage of those kids.

Definitely. We've probably got a long way to go before we hear what kind of jail time Sandusky is facing (assuming he's found guilty).

So the Graham James thing is definitely a travesty as far as sentencing goes.

But to conclude that it's a Canadian problem is, I think, unfair.

The US has plenty of f'd up sentencing issues too.

its true ... it happens everywhere ... but cdn criminal sentences are way too lenient ... in the US, corrections is an industry (more so than in Canada) that "encourages" longer stiffer sentences. My father in law used to own a company in the security industry that was a vendor to different counties all across the US yet he had no contracts in Canada. There is no such thing as a superprison in Canada.

Our Prime Minister made it a campaign promise that he would build these super-penitentiaries ... alot of the general public in Canada was against it ... Im sure alot of these same people were calling yesterdays Graham James sentence a travesty :noidea:

So at the risk of taking us off topic, I'd say that it's a good thing not to model your system on the US system.

We have some of the longest, harshest punishments in the developed world, despite our overall crime rate being similar to other developed countries (though our homicide rate is significantly higher).

We are also generally thought to have a much higher rate of recidivism than other developed countries, though global statistics on this are murky.

yah i dont really want to go off topic but i think theres a middle ground to be found for canada ... Canada/US are at opposite extremes

Well, it's a Canadian sentence, right? So, two Canadian years... that's, what, 14 in American years?

They don't like pedos much in jail. Rest assured, James' sentence will be a long, stiff one.

Well, it's something I guess.

He ruined so many lives, he should never be allowed to have one.

I hope he has a linebacker named Bubba as his cellmate the entire time, and no getting out early for good behavio(u)r...
