I'd kind of like to hear what Shanahan has to say about this. That guy always screamed character, integrity, and honesty to me... well, you know, when he wasn't plowing a teammate's wife.

Nice NHL fluff piece and softball questions in the embedded interview...Good old Colie continues to "blame the messenger" instead of taking responsibility for unprofessional conduct.

NHL's Campbell explains supplemental discipline process - NHL.com - News

On the supplementary discipline front, how about somebody from TSN, CBC, or Sportsnet stepping up to the plate and asking Campbell to explain how the Jokinen cross-check which resulted in a three game suspension was any different from the Nash stickwork to the head of Mark Giordano earlier this year which only cost Nash $2500?

The on-ice product has never been better in my opinion, but this league continues to be run by clowns.

i saw that last night and thought immediately that I needed to get David Amber on my slo-pitch team cause those softballs he's throwing up there are coming down with rain. This is what you left espn for David?

does this mean there will be no fireside chat between "Ronnie" & "Colie" tomorrow night?

My biggest issue with this story is how the hell didn't any legit media source get this information first? It really took some relatively unknown blogger to track down and read these emails? They were used in a court case or something and therefore put in public record. How did no one think: hmmm, maybe we should check them out and see if there's anything interesting in there. C'mon media. It's basic investigative journalism to have someone go through emails of recently published emails of well known individuals. You never know what you'll find.

Props to the blogger though.

Actually Rob Cribb of the Toronto Star was the first one to break the story regarding e-mails (sometimes quite profane) from Campbell suggesting they turf referee Dean Warren back in October of 2009. Tyler Dellow took the additional steps of researching the e-mails further and connecting the dots regarding games involving his son and the Marc Savard is a "little fake artist" gem.

so true

the emails were in a story about 2 months ago written by Rob Cribb in the Toronto Star ... and Damien Cox (his cohort at the Star) was first on the weasel scene alledging that blogger Tyler Dellow copied it and Rob Cribb should be credited with it ... and then he backs down apologizes and deletes twitter posts when he figures out Tyler Dellow is a lawyer ... I thought lawyers were supposed to be the bigger weasels but the petty Damien Cox does a good job changing my mind

Rob Cribb did no research to draw any inferences about what the names of the players that were censored in court documents actually were ... AND ROB CRIBB IS APPARENTLY AN AWARD WINNING JOURNALISM PROFESSOR .. thats a big doh'

Just my opinion, but I think Damien Cox was instructed to apologize (and remove the tweets) by his bosses at the Toronto Star, I don't think he volunteered that apology.

Here it is.

NHL VP Campbell discusses email controversy with TSN

The most telling part for me is not his terrible (to the point of hilarity) attempt at covering his use of "fake artist", but when he says his son has had a tough go of it because he plays in the same league for which Colie is working. :L

You should have stepped aside as soon as your son was drafted/signed/attended a training camp.

Being that that is impossible he should just step aside now.

I remember Cox taking a similar twitter break just after his stories/tweets insinuating that Jose Bautista was on the juice. Maybe Cox deserves credit for getting himself in a heap of trouble 140 characters at a time...

As for the TSN interview, pretty much a rehash of the David Amber NHL.com piece, although Duthie seemed to get under Colie's skin somewhat with suggestions that Campbell should resign. Who's going to get a shot at him next, Cabbie?

Okay, I'm very scared, Mike Milbury just wrote a blog regarding "Colie-gate" and I find myself in total agreement with what he has written.

I'm sorry, so sorry - Mike Milbury

/HNIC could be very interesting tomorrow night...

Yeah but did they report Campbell calling players fakers and such? I thought their story was just about him not liking an official or something. I know you gave a link but its not loading for me right now.

It actually makes it worse that the Star looked through the emails and couldn't come up with this story first. From what I've heard, the blogger got the juicy parts of the emails long after they first became open to the public.

Good article. Short, sweet, and to the point. I don't usually agree with Mad Mike but he hit the nail on the head.

I just watched an interview with the Sportsnet "pundits" and you're right, jstew, he should just stop doing interviews. He's not apologetic about anything, he's just sorry he got caught.

OVERBLOWN

I worked at a private school for two years. If some of the emails between the teachers and administrators got revealed to the public, everyone would be fired, hell, some would probably be arrested.

I hate Colin Campbell for his terrible justice system, but this doesn't bother me a bit.

I saw a bit like that as well. basically "yeah, well if I knew that tese e-mail would come out, I would have worded them differently".
Fuck you, Campbell you self-righteous douche.

really? let's put it this way:
An administrator sends an e-mail to a teacher, saying "my kid is in your class, make sure he passes" or "I babysat that kid a long time ago. He was a prick. why don't you fail him?"
that's an issue.

Just to take puck's analogy a little further - Would the NHL allow a referee to officiate a game that his son was playing in? Well, we kind of saw that earlier tonight with an off-ice official in St. Louis (and the answer was no). Colin Campbell is sending e-mails to Stephen Walkom (head of referees at the time) indicating what he thinks is and isn't a penalty in a game involving his son. That's about as gray and murky as it can get.

I thought the CBC hotstove appropriately covered all the points tonight. Is this, or should it, get Campbell fired? No and no. Not even close IMO. Should have he apologized and admitted that he shouldn't be having discussions of that sort with the head of officiating, even if he's just an angry hockey dad and Walkom was a friend? Yes, and Campbell's both an asshole and an idiot for not doing that.

I have to disagree with that. The referees are supposed to be completely unbiased. They are supposed to call things exactly as they see them, and while I'm sure some of the refs have their own personal biases (I bet Cooke, Avery, and Ruutu get a more watchful eye than St. Louis and Datsyuk) most of those are earned by the players. I'm sure the refs go out of their way to call games as fairly as they can. If their boss is breathing down their neck, or their boss's neck, it should be about ONE thing: doing their jobs more effectively. "Hey you misses a hook, hey I don't agree with your interpretation of that rule, hey we're trying to crack down on this or that". They should NOT be made to feel uncomfortable about making calls on the boss's son. Campbell shouldn't be looking at the crest on the front of the jersey, or the name sewed on the back. He should be looking at the actions of the players and refs themselves, period.

It would be one thing if Campbell had been doing his job with some sort of consistency, but he's been making calls that defy logic for years. He's got no trust built up from his actions, in fact he, his office, and his decisions have quite literally become a joke. Between the DGB Suspension Flow Chart and the Wheel of Justice, no one has been taking him seriously for quite some time.

I know you made the point that at your school emails much worse than this are a commonplace, but that still doesn't make it right.

I'm not one of those people that thinks that the NHL needs to bend over backwards to cater to Americans and sun belt states, but I do think that for the health and stability of the league we need strong, profitable franchises. I agree with Dash, the product on the ice is as good as it's been in a long time, but we can't have the integrity of the league called into question off the ice. It's one more reason for fans in Florida, California, and Atlanta not to take it seriously. I guess on the bright side, most fans down there probably haven't heard a sniff of this story, lol.
