fuck I hate Damien Cox

Friedman took a balanced approach ... i still think the cbc will give "Colie" his soapbox saturday night and "Ronnie" will be in full fellate mode

However, Dave Newell, who spent 40 years in the NHL as a referee and war-room official, said Monday, "You're asking me if personal relationships ever affected suspensions, or lack thereof? My answer is yes."

dont mean to quote myself but how many times does this have to appear in print before someone takes action. and if its in print ... how many people think it but dont say it

The emails also back up Willie Mitchell who suggested Campbell's decisions are influenced by his personal relationships.
"I know Colin Campbell has a lot of relationships with general managers and owners and stuff like that. It's very tough to hand down decisions on matters like this when you're friends with people. It's like saying I have to discipline my teammates. It's too emotional. You can't always make the right decision."

I posted the link about Ken Read stepping down as head of Alpine Canada once his son joined the team as the best way to handle any potential conflict of interests. Once Gregory Campbell made the NHL, Colin Campbell should have handed in his resignation as executive vice president etc. and pursued any available NHL GM's opportunties within the 30 NHL teams.

Bottom line: You can't have a player participating in the NHL and have a family member overseeing how discipline and hockey operations are carried out in an executive role like Campbell currently holds. It really should be strict NHL policy.

definitely true ... but does it go far enough?

taking the family relation out of the equation, can we expect a former player, former coach, former gm to be completely free of bias when it comes to disciplining someone he may have had some sort of relationship with in the past as a teammate or a player he may have coached

they have independent (alledgedly!) 3rd parties handle salary arbitration ... why not discipline?

That's a very good question you pose, jstew...An independent panel or committee rather than one person with known biases serving as judge, jury, and executioner? Maybe something to talk about at the next CBA meetings?

I did find a pretty good article written by Bruce Arthur of The National Post...

Can the NHL’s top sheriff still be trusted? | Posted Sports | National Post

I like this one

This changes everything about the emails. Before, Campbell just looked like a highly opinionated and profane guy who was feverishly trying to dismiss an official who claimed he was targeted for his role with the officials’ union. Now, it looks like Campbell was hectoring a league official over a call made against his son. As he told TSN, “Stephen knows I’m a [hockey] dad venting.”

memo to "Colie": Stephen also knows THAT YOU ARE HIS FUCKING BOSS

To paraphrase Bob McKenzie:

NHL's view "Yes Colie is a dick, but he's OUR dick"
McKenzie: Campbell still has backing of NHL community

"It's not about one man, it never has been. It's about The Game, those who run it, those who play it and how they govern it. They do, we (media and fans) don't. That's just the way it is. "

Bobby Mac glosses over (or conveniently misses) something pretty big in the following:

Much was made of Campbell's email to director of officiating Stephen Walkom, when Campell wrote: "I hate soft penalties...remember that when I'm a GM!" For anyone who knows Campbell they would have to laugh at that one because the former coach does hate "soft calls" and has said that publicly over and over again, expressing empathy for any GM or coach when they complain about getting one.

The point that Bobby Mac missed is that "soft call" was made against his son, Gregory Campbell. The other fact (and jstew pointed this out earlier) that Colin Campbell is/was Stephen Walkom's boss. Even the slightest hint of altering calls or not calling penalties calls into question the integrity of the game and that for me is the biggest point.

if i wasnt clear ... Colie is/was Walkoms boss and no matter how he now says he was just being a hockey dad and Mr joke guy ... he still has/had authority over Walkom and any employee getting this type of email might be left wondering ... "is there a bit of seriousness there ... maybe he wants me to do this"

fwiw ... from puckdaddy

Perhaps then it's Walkom who doesn't understand the nuance between an interested parent's venting and an NHL VP of hockey operations exerting influence. Because Warren went on FAN 590 in Toronto this afternoon and provided anecdotal evidence that Campbell's complaints about his son's games were trickling down to the on-ice officials via the NHL's head of officiating.

From FAN 590 (podcast here), Warren's recollection of a situation involving the Florida Panthers. Again, one side of the story from a source potentially grinding an axe:

"There was a number of situations. I recall one specifically when I'd called a penalty late in the game against Florida. Stephen Walkom was the director of officiating at the time and he called me the next say saying, 'You know Dean, Mr. Campbell doesn't think it's a penalty.' I said, well, the guy ran him down from behind. The player got hit, went head-first into the boards. I don't know you can't call the penalty. As a matter of fact, I kind of wondered [about] a game misconduct as well as the penalty.

"Stephen Walkom said, 'Look, if I gotta listen to Colin Campbell anymore I'm going to slit my own wrists.' That kinda gives you an indication of ... Mr. Campbell was certainly ruling or making decisions on games involving Florida and his son's team."

He said the refs didn't necessarily give Gregory Campbell leeway, but couldn't speak for all officials: "Did you help out your boss's kid a little bit? I don't know."

I'm pretty sure the NFL wouldn't be so quick to sweep something like this under the rug. The NFL also has been forthcoming (for the most part) when their officials make a mistake during a game.

Two things the NHL unfortunately still needs to learn.

After what Campbell said about Savard how can Marc or the Bruins expect to get fair treatment from Campbell? It's ridiculous. If he won't resign he should be fired immediately. This is far more serious than the NHL & many of the hockey media care to admit.

The asshat Damien Cox with a tweet:

Upon consideration, my comments about @mc79hockey (15 mins of fame, etc.) were gratuitous and unnecessary. I retract and apologize. My bad.

Jose Bautista is still waiting for his apology...

Maybe I'm missing something here... but to me, this whole story is a scandal of epic proportions. Right now on TSN.ca/nhl, there's ONE mention of it on the front page. McKenzie has a story about it down towards the bottom...

isn't this a much bigger deal than it's being made out to be by the MSM? Or am I just a sheltered American who isn't getting the full picture of Canadian media wrath?

I think it is a much bigger deal than the MSM is portraying, but the NHL is a cash cow for TSN and you have to believe that they're not going to do anything to incur the wrath of Bettman et al.

During the 2nd intermission of last night's Canucks - Penguins game on TSN, Duthie and the TSN panel (last night it consisted of Mike Peca, Ray Ferraro and Bob McKenzie) discussed 'Colie-gate' for a total of 90 seconds. To summarize: "Colin Campbell is a swell guy and to question his character or motives is asinine".

Oh, I almost forgot, keep watching hockey on TSN, buy NHL merchandise and go to as many games as you can afford. Thanks.

the coverage by the nhl tv rights holders in canada has been downright dismissive ... dash said what it is ... an old boys network ... this goes to the integrity of the game but Blob talked about the disconnect between fans/media and the league office ... what we see as important is nothing for Bettman

in Canada the media chimed in but the NHL knows that nothing will kill cdn passion for the game ... they can pull teams from 2 cities and theyll still have us by the nutsack ... the league attitude is "meh it will just blow over" and it will because this isnt getting any american media play and thats really all the league office is concerned about

I feel like starting a "Fire Colin Campbell" Facebook page. I would call for Bettman's head for not addressing this issue already, but I already know better than to try and send the BOG's lapdog to the pound.

Hockey fans in America are just as pissed as you guys, but as Captain Obvious will tell you things like Micheal Vick and Tony Parker take precedence down here.

On NHL power play Espo was defending Campbell today. Why are so many people coming to his defense. I don't get it. The crack against Savard alone should get him fired. His roulette wheel for discipline makes it a no brainer.
