You can pick ProV1s up online for < $30 a dozen. I've had good luck with lostgolfballs.com. But at the risk of piling on, if you lose 6 per round the ball probably isn't the problem.

I get new logo overrun PV1s for $35 per dz, but I've seen refurbs for <$30 per dz.

Yeah it was around that the last time I bought some. But it's been years since I've had to purchase any. My regular course has a few spots, especially one on a par 5 .. a 2nd shot, blind, forced carry over a wooded marsh/creek where you can usually find a handful of high end balls in a minute or 2. I haven't even had to do that in awhile. I just love 30 indexes who play ProV1s.

My favorite local course is The whitmore lake links; particularly for the back 9. The entire back 9 is full of water, cart path bridges to get you hole to hole and has one of my favorite holes I've ever played. Basically has a cart path through a pond and in the middle is a tee box with artificial turf. You have to hit out of the lake to safety. ALso really like the UM course; but that thing always beats me to shit. Lots of really hard, blind, par 5 holes.

I love Whitmore Lakes, especially the back 9. The front is nothing special... kind of wide open and short. It's inexpensive too. I've played there many times, though it's been a few years. I've broken 80 twice in my life and once was there. I think I still have the card somewhere. That's the par 5 #13 ^. It's a great hole. I've seen it ranked as one of the best public course holes in the state. You basically need 3 good shots to avoid an "other" and the approach is about a 160 yard forced carry where if you miss the green you'll be lucky to even find it.

The most devilish part of that 13th hole is that even after the crazy tee shot, you have to hit blind at the green and there's a fricken water hazard right in front. So you have to hit short to avoid that and unless you know to do that, you're definitely going to end up in the drink. But yeah, that back 9 is just so cool with all the bridges and swamps you're hitting in and around. I really like the course as well because they don't use par 5's as the hard or cool holes exclusively. Too many courses use basically straight, long, par 5s to make it difficult. But The Links uses really tough, bendy or full of hazard par 4s to create the difficulty. Love it.

So here's my conundrum, I want a better ball to play with but I don't want to spend $60/dozen on Pro V1s because I lose probably 6 balls playing 18 holes and would bankrupt myself. What's a decent ball in the like $20-$30/dozen range that I won't feel as bad losing but get the benefits of a better ball? There's a ton of rankings online and outside of the top few golf balls, all about the same price ($60/dozen) they aren't very conclusive. Anyone have experience with better balls?

I do know I tend to like a softer ball off the tee, I seem to drive better and with more control.

i'm a new golfer and also lose around a half a dozen per 18 so, right now, i buy refurbished balls from a local store. pay $20 for a bag of 50.

right now, until you get better at your swing and contact with the ball, it really doesn't matter what you are hitting. Got to work on the mechanics first before spending a lot on clubs or balls.

On an avg year...I play about 50-60 rounds a yr... I normally buy 4 dz for the year and I use maybe 3 dz or 2 dz and a sleeve. I always carry over a dz or so balls from the previous yr. I typically look for prior generation 3 pc balls....one yr I got Srixon Z series ball for $24.95 per dz...last yr I got yellow Callaway Chrome Soft for $26 per.

In the summer there is a really nice course that offers deals late afternoon to fill up a tee sheet...normally $100+ on weekends, $80 during the week. They let people out for $40 after 4p during the week. every time I go, I find 2-3 basically brand new PV1, B330, etc...high end balls, normally not too far off the beaten path. Those well heeled members that play in the morning don't bother to look too hard for their balls.

You just missed a deal for the Zstar that was BYGO on their website; which turned into basically 12 for $20.

It’s wonderful. Weekday rate was $39 for 18. And I can’t imagine a nicer course. It’s cut into a pine forest in the middle of nowhere. Just an awesome course.

It’s no joke. The back 9 has all sorts of water and swamps you have to avoid. Any minor imperfection in angle or distance lands you in the woods or a swamp.
