I don't think I am good enough to be able to tell the difference between one ball and the next. My mom keeps buying me Pro V's for holidays and I feel bad playing with them because I certainly lose them. Not at an alarming rate, but I still lose them.

but like I said, I don't know shit about what ball I hit best. I just hit what I have in my bag.
Yeah, I just play with whatever balls I pick up on the course. I let the suckers buy them.

Buy the best balls money can buy. Trust me, it will make a huge difference.

By the way, what course do you play?

.
My favorite local course is The whitmore lake links; particularly for the back 9. The entire back 9 is full of water, cart path bridges to get you hole to hole and has one of my favorite holes I've ever played. Basically has a cart path through a pond and in the middle is a tee box with artificial turf. You have to hit out of the lake to safety. ALso really like the UM course; but that thing always beats me to shit. Lots of really hard, blind, par 5 holes.

So here's my conundrum, I want a better ball to play with but I don't want to spend $60/dozen on Pro V1s because I lose probably 6 balls playing 18 holes and would bankrupt myself. What's a decent ball in the like $20-$30/dozen range that I won't feel as bad losing but get the benefits of a better ball? There's a ton of rankings online and outside of the top few golf balls, all about the same price ($60/dozen) they aren't very conclusive. Anyone have experience with better balls?

I do know I tend to like a softer ball off the tee, I seem to drive better and with more control.

do ya have scuba gear and a flashlight? scuba steve your ass to the local course and take a swim to the bottom of the lake.

I do that to some extent, I just save those balls for holes where there's a good shot I'm going in a lake.

I've been loving the Calloway soft-chromes so far this season. But I play with a lot of long irons and rely heavily on fairway placement

oh I buy them, but I won't spend a ridiculous amount on them

I was playing Titleist NXT Tours for a while. Never had a problem with them.

Also fun fact, the University of Michigan golf course is one of 50 courses designed by Alister MacKenzie

Alright, played 18 on Wednesday and I really like the new balls. It's hard to say how much they impacted my game as a whole since I upgraded my irons and 3 wood since I last golfed but I had a pretty good day; lost only 3 balls on the 18. But most importantly, scored my first ever eagle on a short par 4 (who cares if my drive nailed a tree that perfectly bounced it onto the green). I really liked the soft feel of the new balls and I'm not sure if it was them, the irons or a combination of both but I had spin on the ball that I've never had. The ball was hitting the turf with the irons and just stopping dead or shooting back with my wedges. Overall, pretty happy.

I try a few different brands but I can't quit the ProV1s.

That would seemingly be the time to play found balls...middle school....lol

I buy balls, just look at it as part of the cost to play....find closeouts for a good price every yr.

I picked up 6 dozen from Costco this year.

Time to start losing them.

OK, well; I made some progress. For the first time in my life I shot under 100 over the weekend (scored 99); helped significantly by my 47 on the back 9. I think I ended with 5 par holes, which I've never had more than two in 18 before. And if it wasn't raining, I might have had more (the greens were crazy hard to read and had puddles). It felt very much like this:

You can pick ProV1s up online for < $30 a dozen. I've had good luck with lostgolfballs.com. But at the risk of piling on, if you lose 6 per round the ball probably isn't the problem.

I've also had good luck from that site. I picked up a bucket of 50 mint Pv1s at the end of last year, and while many had logos or player marks, they all looked new. I'm finishing up a dozen Callaway supersofts my MIL got me for Easter at the moment while getting out the winter kinks and then putting the PV1s in the bag.

Also doesn't hurt that a lot of guys at my country club play PV1s and I come across more than I lose myself.
