Well, someone will have to be second string FS. Are you saying its more likely they shuffle a cornerback in there and have Manning start at 155 lbs? I'm just confused how we can afford to redshirt any safeties.

I think that would be the plan. If Bonner got hurt (probably worst case scenario) my guess is Exum would move to FS, Fuller would move to boundary corner, and Manning would play field corner. Riley also has a chance to beat Manning for the 3rd corner spot because his body is ready.

If we had to play a freshman at safety it would be rover, because no true freshman is going to understand the defense well enough to make the right defensive calls, and my money would be on McKinnon, or maybe Riley as I think he ends up at FS eventually.

Riley is all corner, IMO.

Greene and Frye may end up at safety though.

This is what I'm imagining in a few years...

BC: Kendall Fuller
FC: Donaldven Manning
FS: Donovan Riley
ROV: Holland Fisher

I know Bud wanted Fisher to be at Whip when they recruited him. I wonder with RVD stepping up at Whip if that keeps Fisher in the secondary.

:) this is the conversation I tried to start over in the preseason practice thread...

I believe Cole was listed as the backup FS this spring, but now he's listed at Rover, so I guess (at least to start practice) they moved him. Does seem odd having the depth we do at Rover while we give the 2nd team FS reps to a true freshman. But the coaches know what they're doing. Can only help us in the long run, I just hope nothing happens to Bonner.

I know it's still early but it sounds like Joel Caleb and Josh Stanford are both looking good early. One would have to guess that one or both will end up NOT redshirting and figure into the 3-deep at WR. Good news considering what we lose after this season at WR. A lot of talk and questions about whether Coles could redshirt. I'd rather he didn't but I hope that he stays out until he's really ready to go. The beginning of the schedule is soft ENOUGH I think where we could live without him. Davis needs to step up.

no..don't think the coaches are considering it but it's definitely a topic of discussion in the blogosphere...highly doubt it will happen. from accounts of the last two practices, seems pretty safe to say that he MAY not be ready to go by labor day.

It's up to Coles if he wants to redshirt. He has been against redshirting in the past because he already prepped and is older than most (will be 23 in September).

No point in looking forward to '13 by any means but if everyone stuck around who could, our two main issues would be depth at WR and OL .. DJ redshirting and having some freshmen step up this season and get some quality field-time would help the WR situation next season a lot. But I doubt that he will

Guess Coach Gray doesn't agree with me. From AB article:

"Gray said in the event of an injury, he’d likely move Bonner and Jarrett back to corner before he would consider moving Antone Exum back to safety."

I think losing DJ this year would really hurt us offensively. We ran a lot of 3 WR formations last season, and with uncertainty at RB and TE I expect that to increase. I think DJ will play as soon as he's ready.

I liked Stanford's film, but to be honest, I never thought he'd be considered for the 4th WR position as a true freshman, I always thought he would redshirt and Caleb would be in that spot.

Gotta like this...

“I feel about Michael Holmes the way I felt last year about Logan Thomas,” Tech head coach Frank Beamer said. “I think he’s got a chance to be very good. When guys have done it in high school and are used to carrying the ball and not fumbling, that’s good. I had a great feeling about Logan a year ago, and that’s how I feel about him [Holmes].”

Storylines abound as Hokies gear up for 2012 season

Looks like more misdirection and motion before the snap and more passing plays in the redzone. Our plays and sets won't change much.

More passing in the red zone would be nice. Just to make the offense a tiny be less predictable.
