No these were sturgeon and I could be wrong on the run. It was spring only and my buds would just say "the sturgeons running" and we would go a few times for a couple of weeks and then it was over and on to the sandpits.

Our stories are similar.

I'm gonna keep his info credible then. The sturgeon are always here just in the deeper water bottom feeding. They come up to the sandbars to spawn in shallow water a couple weeks in the spring and that's when we can catch them on worms. If they only ran to Gavenspoint to spawn, where do they hang out the rest of the year and why can't they be caught bank fishing?

BTW. I wasn't questioning that you were catching sturgeon (there's no mistaking them), just that they run to Gavenspoint just to spawn.

Yeah that was clear. I was probably mistaken about the run.

Picked this evening.

I didn't walk far (1/2 hour) and I probably cut twice this much and left it on the ground because it was too tall and already branching out to go to seed. I could have found 4X this much if I would have kept walking another hour. This is a strange year.

I haven't fished for sturgeon in years, but we used to do it by Dodge Park in Omaha. They only bite during spawning season (which should be about now). We'd just walk the bank til' we found a sandbar near shore and cast out to it. I've heard the stinkbug thing and something about greenworms that you dig out of the bank, but we always used regular crawlers and had luck. You got me wanting to go sturgeon fishing now.

Northerns are a pita to fillet due to the Y-bones. A guide up in Canada showed me how about 15 years ago. I probably mutilated 10 fish before I finally figured it out.

I learned by watching this video here. You know this guy knows what he's talking about cuz he's got a Minnesooootan accent

LOL...I hunt every bit of 8 miles from where you described.

BTW that's a 19" cutting board, just to give you an idea how far along the season is.

Dad and I pulled out 5 Northerns last year through the ice........all on tip-ups of course. 4 of them were 10+ pounds..........the other one was 8 pounds. One of them was 15 pounds.

Didn't get to fish for 'em this year :(

I done struck asparagus fellas. Filled a whole ice cream bucket full yesterday and today. Shit's poppin' up all over the place.

I even went back to the same exact place I looked yesterday and there were some that came up 10+ inches between yesterday and today already.

Even if it's too big to eat, break it off at the gound anyway and another spear will come up in a week or so. Do that until late May early June, then let it go to seed.
