Austin Bryant will return to practicing today starting the 21-day decision clock
The Detroit Lions have announced that rookie EDGE rusher Austin Bryant will return to practicing today after spending the entire regular season on injured reserve.
Bryant became eligible to return to practice while on injured reserve two weeks ago, but the Lions delayed practicing him because once he begins, it activates a 21-day clock for the Lions to make a decision his status.
That clock starts today.
The Lions have from now until November 19th to either activate Bryant from injured reserve to the active roster or release him from the team (not a likely option). If they don’t make either move, Bryant will remain on injured reserve for the remainder of the year and will not be eligible to return this season.
During this 21-day evaluation, a decision can be made on Bryant at any time. Meaning if they feel comfortable with his health, they could activate him for this weekend’s game against the Oakland Raiders — but don’t hold your breath on that happening.
The Lions won’t be in any hurry to rush a decision on Bryant, with his health being a priority, but for a team that could use an influx of talent in the pass-rushing department, Bryant could add a much-needed spark.
That being said, it’s important to remember, Bryant is still a rookie who missed most of training camp with an injury and still has a lot to learn. So adjust your expectations accordingly. He will likely only be a situational pass rusher to begin his NFL career — but for the Lions, that may be enough.
