Padres-Giants Preview

The San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres found themselves in a pitchers' duel their last time out.

Sunday's series finale sets up as another low-scoring affair.

Looking to become the Giants' first four-game winner, Madison Bumgarner takes the hill opposite the Padres' Clayton Richard as these teams conclude a three-game set at AT&T Park.

One day after falling 5-3 to San Diego (7-15), the Giants (11-10) bounced back with Saturday's 2-1 victory -- their 12th in 16 meetings with the Padres.

Two-time NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum gave up an unearned run over eight innings and ultimately got the best of San Diego's Anthony Bass, who carried a perfect game into the sixth inning.

"We knew it was going to be a tough game just because he's got good stuff and he had good numbers coming into today," Lincecum said of Bass, who fanned eight while pitching all eight innings. "His slider was getting strikeouts and he had a live fastball. We knew it was going to be a grind and it turned out that way."

Runs could be at a premium again with Bumgarner (3-1, 2.96 ERA) and Richard (1-2, 5.11) squaring off.

After struggling in his season debut, Bumgarner has posted a 1.77 ERA in winning three consecutive starts. The left-hander, who is 9-2 with a 2.06 ERA over his last 11 outings, yielded a run and three hits over seven innings of a 7-2 road victory in the back end of Monday's doubleheader against the New York Mets.

"He got us deep in the game and pitched great," manager Bruce Bochy told the team's official website. "We got him some runs and gave him a cushion there, but I thought he had great stuff and did a nice job out there. He's throwing the ball well."

Bumgarner went 0-2 with a 3.67 ERA over his first six starts against San Diego before striking out a career-high 13 over 8 1/3 innings in a 7-2 road win Sept. 5.

Richard has thrived in this series over the previous two seasons, going 5-1 with a 2.11 ERA in seven starts. He's allowed two runs or fewer in all but one of those outings.

The left-hander, who was tagged for a career worst-tying eight earned runs during an 8-4 loss at Colorado on April 18, turned in a much better effort but still struggled with his command during Tuesday's 3-1 loss to Washington. Richard allowed two runs, four hits and issued five walks over 6 1/3 innings.

"I thought his velocity was up and the movement of his pitches was outstanding," manager Bud Black told the team's official website. "If Clayton can repeat that arm slot, I think you'll see more games like that."

Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval went 0 for 4 Saturday as his franchise-record 20-game hitting streak to start a season came to an end. Sandoval, though, is 5 for 16 against Richard.

Angel Pagan has hit safely in 13 straight games following Saturday's 1-for-4 effort.

Bumgarner faces a Padres team that went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position Saturday. Oakland (.181) is the only team in the majors with a lower average with men on second or third than San Diego (.201) and San Francisco (.199).

Yeah, I saw that. :censored:

Of course, after Chez3 gets a couple of extra base hits against Richard today, we're going to be happy Huff ain't in there.

How's that for positive thinking?

Pablo is bound to get brushed off the plate here.

Edit: reason #45 why I am not a pitching coach.

Richard learned how to bunt from Giants pitchers. Nice.
