What does everyone think about this?

Personally, I think it is stupid. I hate the DH, but it does offer an advantage, so if you dont use the option, you are conceding an advantage to the opponent.

Bum is the best hitting PITCHER in the game today. There is little argument about that. But he is still a PITCHER. Also, the Giants are forcing themselves to have to pinch-hit once Bum exits the game. If the giants wanted to use Bum as a DH in a game he is not pitching, I would be more OK with it, because they still would not have to deal with PHing or double switches, which makes the game interesting, but is a disadvantage.

Personally, I think it is 50/50 marketing/political move by Bochy. Marketing because it brings attention to the team and Bum and political because it curries favor with Bum in the locker-room (although this may actually backfire because he is taking ABs away from a "hitter").

Thoughts?

normally I would say it is stupid... But you are not going to argue with your best player... If he wants to do something, he does it... I don't think this is a giants thing, I think it is Bum thing... and I think he is just upset they wont let him in the HR derby, so he wants to make a message... If I was the Oakland pitcher I would bean him on the first pitch... Just to be like your not bigger than the game...

I hate the idea as a Giants fan (of course), but as a baseball fan, I get it, and would silently cheer it...

Hysterically foolish thing to do. wOBA of 200 vs LHP, and 275 vs RHP this year. :rolleyes2:
To be fair, the Giants are decimated by injuries right now, and have no right-handed bats. So Bum MAY be the actual best option.

But using him as the hitting pitcher is a different thing from using him as the DH. The Giants should still use the DH for another position (such as for Brown as the catcher or Gillaspie at 3B) so they could use a double switch later and move the DH to the pitcher later in the game.

I don't think that is a possibility within the rules... I think when you move the DH into the field you forfeit the DH and then you have to bat the pitcher...

Thats not what I proposed, though.

For example (just to paint the picture)...

Bum - SP
Gillaspie - 3B
Williamson - DH (for Gillaspie)

Bum comes out of the game in the 6th on a double switch with Pena for Gillaspie (Pena is hurt, but ignore that right now)

Now the above looks like...

Kontos P
Pena 3B
Williamson DH (for Kontos)

What is not legal about it? Is the DH ONLY for the pitcher now? I know that at least it USED to be allowed to DH for the SS or the catcher (or whatever), but I also think I read somewhere that it was changed a few years back to only be allowed for the pitcher...

No, but I don't think you can change the position the DH is in for...

OK, imagine this scenario...

Regular AL game, 21 inning game...

To protect the bully, the team moves the pitcher to left field for 1 batter to bring in a lefty to pitch. What happens to the DH?

I actually don't know... but how does that protect the bullpen?? a new pitcher still has to pitch...

But very strange scenario...

My point is that the pitcher moves from the mound to the field. In your understanding of the rule, he now must be entered into the lineup, correct? But he is already being DHed for, so he cannot be entered into the lineup. And what happens if he goes back to the mound?

Then again, considering Bumgarner's career slash line of .182/.226/.305/.530, it's also pretty fucking stupid and I imagine somewhat insulting to the Giants' bench players and A's pitchers.

I like Bumgarner, but I hope the A's fit him with a Platinum Sombrero tonight, he leaves a half dozen men on base and the Giants lose by a run.

Batting Bumgarner in the Coliseum is just further proof that Bruce Bochy is a babbling dipshit who's lucked into championships more by being in the right place at the right time than by his managerial acumen.

What a fucking joke.

"Batting a pitcher in an AL park hasn't been done since 2009 when the Rays were too fucking retarded to fill out their lineup card properly."

Bochy did it on purpose. LOL.

What if Bumgarner twists his ankle trying to leg out a single and hits the DL?

Bum is the best hitting PITCHER in the game today. There is little argument about that. But he is still a PITCHER.

Career slash line: .182/.226/.305/.530

Billy Burns, the worst qualified batter in MLB, has a slash of .237/.273/.307/.580.

Bum's got a couple of dingers off of Kershaw, and that is truly remarkable, but batting him when they could DH is fucking stupid.

Might be a fun idea for the Giants and Mad Bum, but we've seen players get hurt while batting too many times. You shouldn't put arguably your most important player in a greater position of getting hurt if you can avoid it.

a little confusing the way i wrote it... I don't think SF just woke up and said we are not going to use a DH today... I think that Bum came to them and asked if he could hit... He probably makes it known that he ALWAYS wants to hit... and he has been making such a fuss recently about the home run derby... he probably demanded to hit, SF/bochy didn't think it was worth it to argue, and let him get his way... It is not like it is a big deal for them as they "let" bum hit every other start...

But no matter what, this is such an ego trip by Bum...

Bad idea to let him bat tonight, but if they really think he's that good of a hitter and the bench is thin because of injuries just let him DH on the nights he's not pitching.
