We shall see how it goes but hoping to find a QB of the future in the middle rounds is pretty much the same as buying a lottery ticket.
No doubt, but on the flipside of that, there have been many competent and even franchise starters in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. And that mid round pick doesn't force a teams hand to start the kid day one and most of the time, mid round picks can be recouped fairly easy. WE now have an extra 3rd rounder that is in the top 100. Not as big of a gamble if there is someone there that is under-rated, imo. Having said that, not saying we should think of that as QBof as much as just if some kid looks to have some promise, it's low risk. Honestly though, I'm kinda glad they've decided to scrap this perpetual band-aid solutions to avoid the all out rebuild and said, let's get young and deal with some lumps for hopefully a better future. Maybe we just let Howell play and see what 2026 brings and I'm okay with a down year of 5-6 wins if we re-build to real contentions. Winning 9 or 10 games and knowing damn well we have no shot is the worst place to be.

These are rumors I've heard - apologies if already posted:
  • Schneider was never really a huge Geno fan, it was a bridge at best... Carroll loved Geno. MAY have been the reason Carroll was let go.
  • DK and Geno had beef with one another - if anything moving on from Geno may actually mean DK resigns. Not only do you have the cap but DK may be happier staying knowing Geno wont be the QB now.
  • Kubiak/Schneider have been strongly linked to Darnold, who's value may be cheaper than Geno's at this point.
  • Geno wanted somewhere between $40-45M, which Seattle may have flat out just said no to.
  • Schneider is a QB draft guy... he does pinpoint guys he likes with certain qualities... he may very well be targeting someone early in this draft.
    • Remember, he wanted Wilson. Carroll DID NOT. He also liked Allen, Mahomes, and was a key part in Rodgers. Again, all rumors, I have never spoken to John personally.
Remember, all rumors. I'm just posting several items that may have led up to this.

I remember John wanting Mahomes and the rumor was Russ was upset, and this was when Russ was ballin, but John knew Mahomes had something special … John kinda knows QB’s he’s shown that …

Yeah he did tend to do that, get real hot then fade… His first several seasons will always be his best, he was SO quick, master at extending plays… He definitely lost that step, still has a great deep ball though, but he’s not what he once was …
Great deep ball. He def could extend plays too. Hes better than i ever gave him credit for

I didn't like the trade at first but am starting to come around on it a bit.

My friend saying he was probably the best available option.

Geno is an adequate NFL starter. He's an improvement over whatever the Raiduhs had in '24 and likely over whatever else they might have had in '25. And then the Pete connection.... it's a big upgrade for LVR in my view and it gives that team a couple years of space to find a long term guy.

Clearly, Carroll doesn't want a youngster and a rebuild.....he is 73 so I get it.

I just don't think it means we are true contenders in AFC West.....a lot of other good teams in the West. But, I am hopeful we make some good moves in FA and the draft to do so.

Seattle gets credit for offering Geno and DK for Max but I am sure they got a good laugh from the Raiders brass....

Rumors are that the Raiders aren't done... They are going to also be pursing a young QB in the draft...

Meh....not with the 1st rounder....this draft isn't loaded. I would roll with AOC as Geno's backup and maybe go after a QB in the '26 or '27 draft at this point.

Focus on getting the OL shored up, a #1 receiver and RB with FA and the draft. Tweak the defense a little.
